A colossal amount of work went into this, I watched a colleague sweat over this dataset for about a month. Also your regular reminder that no one has an official mandate or resourcing to collect local election results (which is why we end up doing this).

Updated OBR migration analysis: Typical migrant only starts receiving more in benefits than they pay in tax at age 92. Lifetime contribution entirely positive. Low-age migrants have a lifetime negative fiscal impact on average. Typical UK resident's impact is neutral or slightly negative.

OBR publishes supplementarly analysis of fiscal impact of migration. Confirms earlier analysis : - the "average migrant" [in their data] earns slightly *more* than the UK average - the "average migrant" makes a more +ve fiscal contribution than average resident obr.uk/docs/dlm_upl...

This book cover is genius. But what book is it?

What were the main nationalities of refugees to the UK in 2024? How about in 1989? The answers for some of these years might surprise you.

Headline figure from today's new immigration stats is a fall of 460,000 or 33% in residence visas issued in 2024, compared with 2023. See the immediate response to the numbers from @migobs.bsky.social ⬇️ migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk/press/migrat...

Immigration stats are out. As predicted: sharp decreases everywhere except boats. Work visas down 37% including down by 81% (eighty one percent) for Health & Social Care Worker visas specifically. Is this good? www.gov.uk/government/s...

Can't believe it's still over two months until this comes out... but we now have a pre-order link, so it is starting to feel real 🙌 Pre-order here: geni.us/SumOfUs Release date: 10 April

Brilliant! Glad to hear others are excited about this wonderfully niche yet very important side of our history.

I'm very excited to announce that my new book SUM OF US: A History of the UK in Data will be published this April by Bridge Street Press/ Little Brown. It feels very timely & future-facing considering it's a history book! I had a lot of fun writing it and I can't wait to hear people’s reactions.

There are at least 44 different accounts you might need to access public services in the UK, says new digital review

Pretty concerning stuff from the government's review of its own digital and data capabilities

Important piece here in The Times about flaws in UK data. Nose-diving response rates to social & economic surveys have left policymakers 'flying blind' in more areas than you might realise. Even affects our estimate of GDP. www.thetimes.com/business-mon...

Only 27% of FOI requests were granted in full in the UK, according to the most recent government data (for July-Sep 2024), down from 32% the previous year. www.gov.uk/government/s...

Meanwhile Christmas in the Netherlands...

Striking drop in health and care visas in 2024, as was the intention of various policy shifts - one of the reasons overall migration will likely be quite a bit lower this year than in the previous one.

Provisional police funding for forces in England and Wales was released this morning: questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-stat...

There are still a few (free!) tickets left for the UK Statistics Assembly in January. Hope to see lots of like-minded stats people there. www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/uk-statist...

The MoJ have released new criminal court stats today for the first time since March. Two publications were postponed earlier this year due to concerns about data quality. Data has now been checked and figures revised. Revisions are fairly substantial for the Mags court backlog (~80,000 in 2019).

This really brings home the scale of some of the recent revisions to the UK's official migration statistics 🤯 Excellent piece by Madeleine from @migobs.bsky.social theconversation.com/why-do-the-u...

Maybe I was ruined by too many pandemic home hobbies but to me 'Type 00' just says pasta flour

This is interesting, in the new migration figures: England and Wales non-UK-born population now stands at ~11.4 million or 19% of the population. Number has been rising steeply since 2021, solely from increase in non-EU population.

Just updated my Migration Statistics briefing paper (PDF is live, landing page should update soon). Well worth a read to understand the background/ context to UK migration statistics. A lot is changing: in the statistics and in the population! commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-bri...

One thing worth noting about today's new migration figures: The ONS now estimates that 181,000 more people migrated to the UK in 2023 than previously thought. That's a 26% increase. For every 4 people they thought migration was adding to the population, they now say it was 5.

New migration estimates out today from the ONS! Main takeaways summarised here by @jdportes.bsky.social ⬇️
