If 🇺🇸 tariffs seem like they were cobbled together quickly using AI & applied uniformly without thought as to the consequences, that’s because they were. Great article @thecommonweal.bsky.social 😱🤖🐧

New Economy Brief - Spring Statement Part 2: The biggest disability cuts on record? www.neweconomybrief.net/the-digest/h...

It is becoming increasingly obvious whatever part of our collective life we look at in detail, that we need a shift in our political & social mindsets about the scale of investment needed just to catch up on the consequences of underinvestment in ourselves, let alone invest in the future.

In 2024, the UK’s billionaires increased their collective wealth by £35 million every day. Corporate profits are soaring. Instead of trying to balance the books on the backs of the poorest both in the UK and abroad by cutting welfare and aid, it's time this government started taxing wealth fairly.

I wrote for @huffpost.com on why the government's plans to slash welfare spending are a cruel, unnecessary choice. Time to start taxing wealth fairly instead of stripping away support from those who can least afford to lose it. www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/green-...

"Reform have received £2.3 million in donations from fossil fuel interests, climate deniers and polluters." @adrianramsay.bsky.social skewers Richard Tice and his party's bought and paid for climate denialism on BBC Question Time.

Every word of this.

Nothing will ever trickle down.

@carladenyer.bsky.social & Ed Davey @libdems.org.uk find courage to speak to the public appetite for cross-party support. You’ve seen the result of @uklabour.bsky.social failed command/control/appeasing centre-right swing voters, media & donors. @compassoffice.bsky.social tinyurl.com/ycy33d6k

Inheritance tax is only paid by a tiny minority. Of 1,800 estates claiming agricultural relief, the Institute of Fiscal Studies (using HMRC estimates) points out that fewer than 500 farms (29%) could potentially pay more inheritance tax. Read: www.transformingsociety.co.uk/2024/12/02/f...

🚨 New! The latest wave of evidence for the SEND Inquiry has ideas from schools, parents and professionals. A short highlights 🧵 . Any that appeal to you (or not)?

💯

Great to see our new report highlighting the links between children's and women's poverty featured in this week's @neweconomybrief.bsky.social. If Labour is serious about tackling child poverty, it must start where child poverty begins: with the financial insecurity of mothers.

1. Here are just a few of the ways in which Starmer’s Labour Party seems determined to alienate its voters and lose the next election. As they pile up, you have to keep pinching yourself and asking, “what the hell is it playing at?” 🧵

Scapegoating refugees has always been a deliberate ploy by governments to distract from their own domestic failures. Pandering to Reform UK will backfire — and vulnerable people will pay the price. End dangerous crossings by opening safe routes for fellow human beings instead.

Our current parliament least represents how the country voted of any in history. This matters because we will only see significant positive social and economic change when our voting system changes. www.electoral-reform.org.uk/current-parl... Electoral Reform Society – ERS

Growing wealth inequality is increasing the risk of societal collapse. And nearly two-thirds of Britons say very rich have too much influence on politics. – New report from @fairness.bsky.social www.theguardian.com/inequality/2...

Inequality causes disengagement with society and democracy. This is “a strategic risk” to the UK, according to experts. Billionaires are a threat to democracy – taxing them more is the only solution. taxjustice.uk/blog/billion...

Btw @garyseconomics.bsky.social this is the best explanation I’ve yet heard of what we are all doing right now. We’re in a bath saying that our bath water (read homes, incomes, jobs, health, children) will be fine as the rest of the bath water drains down the plug hole (to the very wealthiest)…

@garyseconomics.bsky.social here talking about the exact same phenomenon Marcos & I wrote our book about. Despite on the surface following a centrist status quo, the top 10% of income earners are worried about their children’s futures. We need to build on that. youtube.com/watch?v=ITg2...

💥 We've reached an incredible milestone! 🎉 Thank you to the 100,000 people who have signed up to support the campaign for Proportional Representation. Our movement is growing in strength and numbers. If you haven't yet, now's a great time to join us: makevotesmatter.org.uk/join-the-mov...

@yanisvaroufakis.bsky.social telling it like it is, which is unfortunately rare in the British public conversation these days. youtube.com/watch?v=WQIR...

The lack of moral courage is sickening. And one of the many consequences of our politicians acting as vassals of corporate power (as @yanisvaroufakis.bsky.social said recently @diem25.) This is why I support @novaramedia.com

I've tabled this Parliamentary Motion rejecting Donald Trump's push for the forcible displacement and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from Gaza. It will be published later today. This is a real threat to the Palestinian people. We need to build the biggest campaign against it.

In less than a minute, Justin both a) explains why tariff costs will hit low- and middle-income people hardest and b) shreds the interviewer's unfounded assertion that tariff costs will be offset by tax relief for ordinary Americans

#Handsoff 💯🙌👏💪 We should start a sister #handsoff campaign in England. As they’re coming for the NHS and the few other assets that haven’t already been stripped. @keepournhspublic.bsky.social

Reform U.K’s policies will only harm working class communities. A party that wants to charge people to see a doctor, led by a millionaire ex-banker, pushing the interests of big corporations and fossil fuel giants, is no friend of working class people.

💯 agree with Ollie & @garystevenson.bsky.social except when Gary says that the status quo is working for the relatively rich in the public conversation he’s part of. They might not admit it, they’re worried too. See @policypress.bsky.social #UncomfortablyOff youtube.com/watch?v=fhJo...

There is no automatic reversion to "normal" in politics. Nor will the timid business-as-usual which got us into this mess get us out of it. We'll achieve a better society after Trump and similar tyrants only through massive and focused movement-building. It has to start right now.

Donald Trump's threat to Gaza is genocidal. But the Western media has helped normalise it - just like they've normalised the depravity from day one. New post 👇 www.owenjones.news/p/trump-prop...

The UK government absolutely have to stand up against this 21st Century fascist. We knew he was going to be bad so let's not be shocked, let's send a clear message that nobody in the international community supports this www.theguardian.com/world/2025/f...

Yanis sums up so well here what we are witnessing. A fragmented politics. A centre left purging itself trying to adapt as the centre is pushed to the right. A govt that is a vassal of the powers that be. Fascists who appear to be better at listening to the public & empathising with their fears.

"Leave or die' Trump tells the Palestinians of Gaza, endorsing the war crime of ethnic cleansing as official US policy. Europe now has to make its choice: Leave NATO immediately or forever be remembered as Trump's lieutenant in this crime against humanity www.nytimes.com/live/2025/02...

The President of the United States welcome a leader wanted by the ICC and officially endorsed ethnic cleansing. Now would be a good time for our government to defend international law. If they won’t say it, we will: Palestinians aren’t going anywhere.

This is ethnic cleansing. Keir Starmer has been a disaster turning away as thousands of innocent people have been brutally killed. But this is one time he could just simply do the right thing and at least condemn this. He's sunk so low though - it feels inevitable he won't.

I've never spoken to a gen Z person, but I'm pretty sure this is true x www.normalisland.co.uk/p/the-best-w...
