Midnight in America. This was the most shameful display of amorality I have ever witnessed. The people of Ukraine are in the hands of Merz and Macron now, because Trump and Vance have left the camp of democracy and self-determination. Slava Ukraini. 🇺🇦

Of the 4000 researchers at NIH, only 20% are tenured. They’re going to fire all the rest as their contracts come up for renewal, absolutely decimating research at the NIH. This is catastrophic, not just for Americans, but for the whole world. www.science.org/content/arti...

We’ve tried to shelter our minds but tonight we’re preparing for the genocide of Science. Entire NIH departments will have no leaders. World renowned Scientists kicked to the curb without cause, & grants will loose their lead investigators. Is this what they want? Chaos? Destruction?

We keep going through the same conspiracy theory over and over and over and over again 🙃

All probationary federal employees at NOAA’s EMC that’s responsible for keeping all US weather model systems running have been fired with 1 hours notice. And that includes me and colleagues. We will not go quietly because we care about the NOAA mission to protect the public.

Cutting the EPA staff by 65%. The plan is clearly to hollow out every agency they don't like so it can't do its work. It's so much easier to destroy than to build. How long will it take to refill those positions in a Dem administration? Years won't be enough. www.reuters.com/world/us/epa...

not the biggest issue here but it is psychotic to think **space based internet** is the best option for big fixed facility right next to or within a city

Looks like the new leadership at the FAA is going to cancel a $2.4 billion communication systems contract with Verizon and give it to... Anyone want to guess? Anyone? That's right: Elon Musk's Starlink! www.washingtonpost.com/business/202...

Important and under-covered attack on the guts of NIH's intramural program from @science.org NIH ban on renewing senior scientists adds to assaults on its in-house research | Science | AAAS www.science.org/content/arti...

More hits to #NIH: "The Trump administration has imposed a new restriction on employment that could push out thousands of NIH’s senior scientists: The agency cannot retain scientists in 1-year to 4-year positions that have long been routinely renewed." 🧪 @jocelynkaiser.bsky.social at @science.org

BREAKING: The NIH summer internship program (SIP) has been officially cancelled, across all institutes. It’s a sad loss for the brightest science students in America, for American science, and for future cures for diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s. 🧪 1/

Vaccinate your kids. “COVID-19 vaccines cut the risk of long COVID by between 57–73 percent in kids and teens, according to a study published today in JAMA Network Open.” arstechnica.com/science/2025...

The moment in the cabinet meeting where RFK Jr, acting as the actual head of HHS was asked to respond to a deadly measles outbreak caused by vaccine refusal was one of those out-of-body, waking nightmare moments of the Trump era.

No. The part of the public that now hates NIH does so because of lies from Fox and Republicans and the WSJ Opinion section, full stop. And now, like little children, the whiny rightwingers are trying to blame scientists who care about fairness and the best science.🧪 Get outta here.

WE JUST GOT DOGE’D no funding for this year. We have to cancel the program and email 450 applicants there will be no REU program in physics at MSU. First time in 20+ years. I’m fucking livid, y’all.

The NIH is cancelling its Summer Internship Program. ~1200 college kids won't get trained in biomedical research this summer because why? Oh yes, "government efficiency". Yeah, things will be really efficient when we've got doctors and researchers that are less well-prepared to do what they do...

I have heard that NIH is canceling its summer internship program

Just got this passed on to us, about the damage at NIH's home campus -- the largest biomedical research institute in the world. "The articles on cuts and damage assessments are largely grants focused. The grants program is a bit easier to characterize because it’s visible outside the NIH..." 🧪 1/

A terrible environmental catastrophe is unfolding in Zambia right now 🧪

For the US to side with Russia and North Korea to oppose a UN resolution condemning the illegal invasion of Ukraine defies all common sense and adds insult to the countless injuries suffered by the brave Ukrainian people. edition.cnn.com/2025/02/24/p...

There are so many reasons university endowments can't make up for the dramatic cuts the Trump administration has planned for science. Here are a few. Thanks to @donmoyn.bsky.social for the platform.

Very useful explainer.

FINALLY! I always knew Kennedy was behind the high cost of eggs. These Republicans are really getting things done.

Sadly true. Also expect that anything you have put in eRA Commons, NIH’s central grant application and review repository, will be used to train Musk’s AI. We should start asking Grok “what research work is <X NIH grant applicant> proposing to do” and see when confidential info starts popping up. 🧪

From a source at NIH, some grants may be nixed because the investigator’s bio sketch mentions DEI-related activities, even if the science itself has nothing to do with it.

So. It has officially happened. I have been officially let go from my position at CDC. I wasn’t a probationary employee. I had stellar performance reviews every year. I’ll be ok. But please understand that many worked HARD to get into these positions and were doing great public health work.

Aside from everything else it's just kind of funny that the CFPB is way over there on the left, meaning "companies shouldn't be able to scam you and take your money" is largely antithetical to conservatism

Happy now #BillCassidy #SusanCollins #JoniErnst, #TomTillis? Your cowardice will kill. www.politico.com/news/2025/02...

A brief history of the Pentagon's relative clear-eyed realism on climate change, now apparently upended by weird children

"America has no king" seems like a good theme to rally around

The head of the Autism, ADHD, and Externalizing Disorders Interventions Research Program at the National Institute of Mental Health was fired over the weekend, 21 days shy of the end of her one year probationary period. She posted about it on fb.

So #BillCassidy, #SusanCollins and the rest of the Quisling caucus knew that #RFKJr was lying then. But they cowered under the hot breath of the man in the White House and capitulated as they always do. Now, all this is on them.

To my colleagues, friends, and everybody else in the federal workforce, including from the NIH and the CDC, you are all heroes and deserve so much better than the obtuse insanity you’re all living through at the moment. Rest assured that we are with you in this fight and unafraid 💪!

I lost my job at the National Science Foundation yesterday, along with 167 of my colleagues, including some dear friends. This was the best job I've ever had, and I thought it would be my last. The PI community has been sympathetic and supportive, without exception. I will miss working for you.

Do you care if the food you eat is safe? Whether a measles outbreak is headed for your kid's school? Do you want to enroll in a study of a new cancer drug? #ElonMusk #DonaldTrump are playing deadly games with US health agencies. Call your members of Congress now. www.statnews.com/2025/02/17/t...

The Richest Man in the World Says We Can't Afford Any More Cures for Cancer talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/nih-a...

If you wanted to cut waste, fraud, and abuse, you would empower the inspectors general. If you wanted more waste, fraud, and abuse, you would fire them.

The flying public needs answers. How many FAA personnel were just fired? What positions? And why?

#Trump, #Musk, #Vought are destroying NIH; creating a rump-institution that kills research on health disparities by banning grants on words like race, gender, etc; creating a whites-only future for research by banning DEI initiatives. My latest for @thenation.com. www.thenation.com/article/arch...

#billcassidy is the worst. He knew what he was doing was horrendous but did it anyway. Just a disgrace as a physician and human being.

Not all (thank goodness) but some, and that is unconscionable. I have communicated with some of these talented young scientists and they are understandably shattered. I have also communicated with branch chiefs who are sorting out what happens to the leaderless coworkers.
