You'll learn theory at any music school; it's a core part of the curriculum. And you can major in theory at some schools as well, if that's what you're asking!

As a music theorist, who teaches it in a classroom, I hate how we teach it in classrooms haha. It's sooo much better when you get to explore it through your own curiosity

It's important to remember though that even words like "song," "verse," "chorus," "notes," and all those concepts that most practicing musicians who "don't do theory" also fall under the umbrella of theory. There's this trend to think that if it's easy to understand then it doesn't count as theory 😅

I'm actually running a research study on Disney music right now if you want to participate! (And the plan is for my diss to be on Disney music, so I'm 100% always happy to talk about Disney!)

But it's also thrilling. When I see more people have completed the survey, I get so excited! I should probably stop watching it like a hawk, but it's my first real study, so I'm excited hehe

Yeah, you can't perfectly mash together 2 different domains. There are parts that can map onto each other, but not in a pure 1:1 way. I've just gotten into cross-domain mapping in my PhD work, and it's helped me explain a lot of this!

I mean...there are theories that apply to other styles of music; they just aren't widely taught. Yes, you have to go find them, which is an issue, but they do exist! The latest issue of MTO has some cool translations: mtosmt.org

Or in someone's dissertation or even in a theory book that's well known to theorists but isn't taught in undergrad because it's just not undergrad level! Soooo many theories out there!

This is common! It seems boring or irrelevant until you look at music that you really want to dig into

Not weird at all! Plenty of music theorists do it!

If you haven't heard it, "Snuff Out the Light (Yzma's Song)" didn't make it into the final movie! www.youtube.com/watch?v=374x...
