Merv was all about the raunchiness. I think the program’s censors felt “spotted dick” was too on the nose and not innuendo sounding enough for daytime tv (although “Match Game” seemed to get away with a lot). I felt it was unnecessary censorship since it’s just a pudding dessert.

I am old enough to remember Lynn Redgrave and Jackie Collins saying how much they loved “bleeped bleep” on Merv Griffin. Having spent some of my my childhood Summers visiting my Gran in Scotland, I knew they were saying “spotted dick” and this was probably enough to frighten US censors at the time.
