Gulf of Distraction

Banning smartphones from k-12 classrooms and investing in in-person after school programs would probably reduce political extremism across the spectrum.

An unelected billionaire is illegally seizing control of the US government apparatus and carrying out a flurry of crimes as part of an unprecedented authoritarian power grab that directly violates several laws and the US Constitution. Say it plainly. It’s fact.

“Audacious”? Truly disgusting.

For Jared Golden, a Dem in a R+9 district, to be talking like this is actually remarkable. probably gets at some underlying unpopularity of Musk *even relative to Trump*

Very serious Democratic strategists advise the party to allow Trump to illegally dismantle USAID -- a decision that will result in the unnecessary deaths of people around the world. www.politico.com/news/magazin...

It’s almost like they totally suck at their jobs and are woefully irresponsible in their civic duty of informing the public

I realize this is probably too simple for the great minds that work at major news outlets, but we do not impose tariffs on countries. We impose tariffs on the goods we import from countries.

At home, Trump has enabled Musk to stage a coup against the government with his army of unvetted stooges taking over the Treasury. Abroad, he's shut down aid & canceled malaria/ HIV programs & put 1000s of lives at risk. Meanwhile, top Democratic leaders are tweeting about egg and priza prices. 😠

You know what Dems need? Mass rallies in arenas. That would grapple back the media narrative

The exact same story, covered two different ways. Don’t listen to the people who say there’s no better way to communicate urgency than what our political elites are doing

Our media refuses to connect the dots. So if Trump does ten illegal things on a day to seize control of the government, they have ten little stories about how he stretched the law, instead of one big story about how he’s attempting a coup d’etat

I honestly believe our most powerful position in a toxic time that feeds on cynicism, apathy,& despair is to genuinely care and act for a better world. Cynicism is our enemy. We should check it, incl. on the left. It’s not intellectually superior. It’s the virus they’re trying to infect us with. NO

Walter Cronkite's ghost is leaving the building

People keep saying it but Tommy Tuberville, who probably can't tie his own shoes, held up military appointees for like ten months. We are always learning that - oh, Rand Paul can just keep something from coming to the floor. I have never seen a Dem involved in any story like this.

I’m still not over the fact that Tim Walz went viral for calling Republicans ‘weird,’ put Trump and Vance on the defensive, then got picked as Harris’s running mate because of it, and then… he was immediately silenced, disappeared, and Dems stopped calling the GOP ‘weird.’

www.nytimes.com/2024/12/18/o...

Trump is more popular than he has ever been. The media is softer on him than it’s ever been. The chief task of the Dems, and of any self-styled #resistance, should be to puncture that bubble of popularity that he currently has in this honeymoon. To drag him - down. Forget the bipartisanship BS.

Man you are literally the worst messenger I have ever seen in politics

Ah yes, the fundamental error of the Dem mind: assuming that the public is somehow directly observing politics, and that the Democratic role is to react to the public's reaction, rather than help SHAPE the public's reaction

SHARE WIDELY. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS. With mass deportations starting today across the country, it is vitally important - for both citizens and non-citizens - to know your rights. You have the right to remain silent. Assert it. You have the right to a lawyer. Ask for one. (1/3)

I would strongly prefer that societal notions of what it means to be a man is not defined by men like Elon Musk and Donald Trump.

one thing i’m stuck on is this idea that “masculine” energy means license to act like a chud in public, as opposed to more traditional notions of public masculinity, such as those that put a premium on the performance of integrity, honesty, honor and generosity.

rewatching FIGHT CLUB this week i was very struck by how a movie that is very plainly a critique of this vision of masculinity was taken up as a valorization of it

me to merrick garland:

This is a good description of the GOP: The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest, best financed, most applauded and, on the whole, least successful exercises in moral philosophy. That is the search for a truly superior moral justification for selfishness. ~ John Kenneth Galbraith

Anyone who says "History will not be kind" to Trump has never walked through the US Capitol and seen how Jefferson Davis, Alexander Stephens and John C Calhoun all have tributes.

FYI - Harvard law graduates alone comprise 8% of the federal judiciary This will have massive downstream consequences on descriptive representation in the courts in 15-20 yrs

A party of ancients more frightened of being replaced by people who know how to fight than of the thugs actively pulverizing them and the rest of the country. www.offmessage.net/p/democrats-...

We're in a period where moral appeals don't seem to be landing so I want to put this in purely strategic terms: This is a disastrous plan. Our path to win in '26 depends on presenting a clear contrast to Trump's corruption and chaos, not acting like the junior partner in the fascist coalition.

Dems: campaign on Trump as a fascist threat to democracy *Trump wins* Dems: we're ready to work with Trump to get stuff done! also Dems: why don't people don't think we're authentic? it is truly a mystery

Remember how Meta suspended the Threads account tracking Mark Zuckerberg's private jet? www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2... The Bluesky account saw the jet landed in Palm Beach yesterday, and Zuck had a private Mar-a-Lago meeting with Trump today: www.nytimes.com/live/2024/11...

Americans have a weird cognitive bias. People make incorrect estimates about the population. Crazy incorrect. For instance, they think 21% of the country is trans, 40% is black, and 30% lives in NYC. . . . 1/7 www.thebulwark.com/p/americans-...

A new study published in the Journal of Applied Psychology found distinct personality profiles across different occupations. Journalism is among the jobs with the highest score in 'neuroticism.' Advertising and Public Relations has the top score in 'extraversion.' www.psypost.org/new-study-ex...

THAT IS A FORM OF INFLUENCE. YOU’RE A FUCKING LAW PROFESSOR.

um sir my question was about the earned income tax credit

In 2020, only 3.6% of the world’s population lived outside their country of birth. This has already led to a lot of anti-migrant rhetoric and policies. Imagine if 33% of humanity have to migrate.

CNN just said some of the Palestinians being released in the hostage deal are "young men under 18." Feels like there might be another word for that.

When will we no longer need invite codes 😵‍💫

The Onion is singlehandedly keeping me sane.
