Today on Volts: you may have noticed that some climate/energy types (like me) have become obsessed with housing & urban land use lately. Why? Why are they climate issues? What's the connection? The great @mateosfo.bsky.social and I attempt to answer those questions.

Very few Dutch cyclists wear helmets. Yet theirs are among the safest streets on earth. Why? They understand it’s more beneficial to calm motor traffic, build dedicated infrastructure, and nurture a culture of everyday cycling. Not force the most vulnerable users to armour up. youtu.be/P7trv9paMxA

RIP (Recalled Ilario's Pizza)

Library Green treasured the moment Prop A 2018 was approved. Now they are disappointed. But what if the real treasure was the enemies they made along the way? Their legacy is an 11-0 Council and, if all goes well, not one but three tall buildings along Library Lane. #A2Council

Study finds reflective strips on pedestrian clothing blinds some Automated Emergency Braking systems - vehicles don't brake at all. Mazda CX-5 slowed more for people wearing all black. Another reminder that law enforcement/media's victim blaming for pedestrian clothing is misguided.

I just caught up on the meeting. This amendment gives the neighbors what they want for now: Additional engagement and openness to solutions other than "narrowing." (1/2)

Back when I was driving between DC and Tysons for a few years, I was definitely more likely to seek a drive-thru when traffic was slow/stopped. Not so when I rode the Metro. Fast food drive-thrus are yet another artifact of car culture.

Oh yes, Homer’s famous “Tes Thdpssssps.” 👍🏻

My favorite Chet Baker. One day hopefully it will get a proper remaster to bring the percussion up a bit. However, for the time the sound quality is top notch! Quietest 50s vinyl I've heard. Chet Baker Quartet - Jazz At Ann Arbor. OG 1955 Pacific Jazz red vinyl release. #jazzsky #nowplaying #vinyl

Well, I am (temporarily?) out of a job today. 🤬🤬🤬 I'm a fed employee w/a term appt that's been renewed every 3 years for 30+ years & my current one expired today. With the hiring freeze, these kinds of appointments were exempt until a day or two ago when something changed. I found out yesterday.

Happening now in #WALeg: the public hearing on Traffic Safety for All bill! "Road safety is public safety." Bill sponsor Rep. Chipalo Street says "There were 645 traffic deaths in 2024 in Washington. This bill prioritizes enforcement of serious infractions rather than small paperwork issues."

I'm not sure if anyone here in #A2Council needs convincing on this point, but the study has impressive results. To improve quality of life and air quality in A2, we need to be working on a network of protected bike lanes.

To clarify as there is sometimes confusion around the advocacy of making our streets bicycle friendly.

"The Boulder City Council on Thursday, Feb. 6, approved zoning reforms designed to increase housing density and help lower the city’s housing costs. The changes, set to take effect in March 2025" @boulderrl.bsky.social 👇 boulderreportinglab.org/2025/02/06/i...

Speaking of bike lanes, 2x this week I had to stop in the Division bike lane because of drivers turning right from Jefferson and the UM Parking garage just south of Jefferson. Some drivers are only looking left because Division is one-way. So, until its converted, bike defensively! #a2council

Read this. But not on a full stomach and not before bed (you won't feel hungry or be able to sleep, anyway).
