Saddleback tamarin (Leontocebus fuscicollis), also called Andean saddle-back tamarins, are not equipped to extract tree gums. They lay in wait for pygmy marmosets to gouge holes in trees and bully the smaller monkeys away from their quarry. Widespread and common, no major threats imperil them.

For US international students and their colleagues: Choose an English-speaking, US citizen friend to be your one call and memorize their number. Then memorize the number of an immigration lawyer. Remember that ICE and USCIS officers have ultimate discretion over how any encounter might go.

But race is not a biological reality. 😬🤬

Incredible orangutan fossil from Vietnam highlights how diverse this group of apes was in the past; today there are only 3 highly endangered species living on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra (article: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....)

The @ncse.bsky.social has a new climate podcast, Safeguarding Sound Science! The first two episodes are interviews with @michaelemann.bsky.social and @naomioreskes.bsky.social on climate denial. Check it out -- NCSE is also a fantastic organization. Their mission is more important than ever.

The Mauna Loa CO₂ record is the most iconic time series in the environmental sciences. Trump and his enablers are trying to kill it.

Elderly man angers free world, shoots self in foot. News at 11.

Heartbreaking but heroic work by a dedicated nurse. I just don't understand how any American can be aware of these conditions and still think what we need to do is cut Medicaid and food stamps. www.nytimes.com/2025/03/02/u...

This is a gorgeous cover and an even cooler paper - a full phylogenetic tree using BUSCO genes, featuring new genomes for some weirdos including chitons, the watering-pot shell, a tusk shell, a symbiotically chemosynthetic mud clam, the Chilean abalone (not an abalone), and *two* monoplacophorans! 🧪

I think one of the saddest and maddening aspects of the past several weeks is that so many Americans have no conception of the damage that has been done. They will be poorer, sicker, and less secure.

Popa langurs (Trachypithecus popa) were discovered and described as a unique species in 2020. Total population size is estimated at 135-176 mature individuals. The largest subpopulation resides near Mount Popa, hence their name. Threatened by hunting, habitat loss, degradation, and fragmentation

It blows my mind that so many people do not understand that having healthcare is an essential part of being able to work and hold down a regular job. Or that millions do not get healthcare from their jobs.

Friendly reminder that Joann Fabrics isn’t closing because it’s a bad business. It’s closing bc it was bought by a private equity firm. This is also what is happening to Hooters and what happened to US Toys R Us and Red Lobster. These companies are being dismantled intentionally.

West Javan ebony langur (Trachypithecus mauritius) infants are born golden orange and darken after about 3 months. In @nature.com we show that humans lived in rainforests ~150,000 years ago – over double the previous oldest estimate. Their presence in West Africa’s rainforests demonstrates the spread of early humans and places ecological diversity at the heart of our species. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

It is remarkably exciting to see these linear marks associated with human footprints from White Sands, with some as old as 22,000 years. The researchers interpret these as travois marks. Bottom line: People have probably missed these at many other sites. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Undergraduate research opportunities are incredibly valuable, both for the students and for the progress of the work. And having undergraduate research experience is a massive help for grad school admission. REU cancellations harm students’ preparedness & career prospects, and slow research progress
