It is an excellent salary in journalism, including in journalism tech. It sucks that "mission" tech work generally doesn't pay as well as other tech work, but that stems largely from funding constraints. Lots of incredible people choose to work for less than market because they want to do this work.

I'm in Silicon Valley, my rent for a normal 4 bedroom house that's deep in suburbia, is $4500 a month. NYC is in the same ballpark. That salary is borderline low income for a family of 4, they get away with it because it's a noble cause.

Just a note that people with that itemized skillset can easily find salaries of $200k and higher, especially in NY. You'll have to make a few sacrifices to that "everything I want for Christmas" wishlist if you want to get south of 140.

I agree. I thought about applying until I got about halfway down. After reading it a 2nd time, what they need is small team of 3-4 people. If they want to put all that on 1 underpaid & overworked person, then good luck. Currently, it's just a list of some of the highest demand skills out there.

You would be surprised at how many people are willing to take a lower salary in a nonprofit for a meaningful job. That is a common denominator for working for a nonprofit.

Benefits like time off and work life balance are extremely valuable. More valuable than $200k+ & 80 hr work weeks.

I ❤️ NY but also wonder why people can’t seem to understand that unexpected perspectives add value talent alone cannot. Lower COL areas and lifestyles encourage risk taking and creativity NYC and similar metros cannot. It’s hard to see how it seeps into your brain until you’re outside of it.

I moved from NYC to rural Maine mostly for those reasons you mentioned. But honestly, I still wouldn’t be able to take this job at that pay rate. I have kids though so… they’re likely looking for someone outside of a major metro with an abundance of skills and experience and no kids.
