Yes, this. I was half listening to Radio 4 y'day, so I'm sorry that I didn't catch name of commentator - but his point was that Trump is only in power for four years) - it's quite likely that many of his decisions and policies will be only temporary. Not to say that the next pres will be better...

I empathise. My audiologist told me that, because my hearing loss is mainly in the higher frequency sounds, my brain makes up for it by playing a constant high frequency sound in my head. My brain is not on my side.

I do worry that AI and increased automation are both taking away entry level jobs - the sort of thing students, part timers and the newly-qualified do - and employers have yet to work out a new model for career entry, recruitment and progression. How do we give these people real world experience?

Trouble is, we'd have to undo the divergence that has already occurred. Will that be an equal process or will the UK simply have to align with EU rules? Surely a political headache for both sides.

"Motley" is the word that comes to mind for that assortment of carriages. Also, given it's the first run, you'd think they would have given them a wash.

Same for plants. I used to ship boxes of samples to Germany for about £80. Cost now is about £500. Unsurprisingly, I don't ship many boxes of samples any more. See also mysterious white vans at the tunnel...

Working in the world of plants, I do worry that they don't understand the difference between a veterinary agreement and an SPS agreement. Sanitary = animals. Phytosanitary = plants.

I believe that thoughts and prayers are normally the accepted currency on these occasions.

Plant Bluesky is absolutely a thing. That's a Clivia that has been fried by extreme cold. Should regrow from the base if the pot didn't freeze.

I regularly played this (original) video to my son when he was five. He does not seem to have been harmed. He also sang "Narwhals" in the bath most nights. Occasionally, still does. He's now at university, studying grown up stuff.

You are quite aggressive.
Anyway, I think you are right that CM/SU membership is not possible in the short term. That may change. Alignment is more possible, as it can be achieved unilaterally by the UK government, which still has more than 4 years before the next election to implement it.

I said nothing about you being left wing or right wing. I said your arguments regarding the EU sound like those I hear from readers of the Telegraph, coupled with your repeated and continuous use of the word "remoaner" when facing anyone who disagrees with you.
comment in response to

Your arguments sound like those I hear from other readers of that paper.
I still consider myself a remainer and would like the UK to rejoin. But I also understand, sadly, that is unlikely in the medium term. So I look for better ways - that means alignment, because that is possible.

I don't agree. Removing customs tariffs and non-tariff barriers with the UK's largest and nearest market seems sensible to me and would reduce costs, especially for SMEs. CU and SM memberships would achieve that.
comment in response to
post
You do keep calling anyone who disagrees with your opinions "remoaner", so I think the lack of maturity comes from your side.
comment in response to

No, I disagree. We are going backwards, international businesses now view UK as an irrelevant backwater. Maybe actually talk to business people and don't just read the Telegraph?

I admire your optimism.

Intellectual property for agriculture and horticulture. Suggested action - align on plant health, IP and make a customs union. Currently, high levels of duplication of regulations, added cost to the UK market, UK innovation at massive disadvantage to EU. Firms relocating to Europe.
comment in response to

Moreover, in some areas, the EU has moved ahead of us. They have been faster (and, frankly, better) at regulation than the UK.
comment in response to
post
And, in my field, there have been no regulations rescinded. Not one. Only new regulation.
comment in response to

I work with UK and EU regulators daily. I disagree with you strongly. Leaving the EU has not reduced bureaucracy, quite the opposite. The burden on businesses (both sides of the Channel) has increased. We are out of the EU, I accept, but alignment must be the obvious course of action.

Lots of suggestions, few of which - if any - were useful. And I don't think any were implemented.

Have they forgotten the Rees-Mogg call for "unnecessary" regulations that could be scrapped as part of the "Brexit dividend"? As I recall, no useful proposals came forward out of that process.

All wise stuff. I fear that SMEs won't be sufficiently skilled or resourced (or open) to benefit from AI. Many I have spoken with are either ignorant of AI or dismissive. Govt has role to encourage and support SMEs.

Do you think that voter behaviour might change? Always a suspicion that voters behave differently in locals because they "matter less" - if a larger authority, with more powers, might they "matter more"?
