It's interesting how the "American conservative movement" in the 1970s and 80s mashed together "leave me alone to do whatever I want" libertarianism with an evangelical movement premised upon the idea that "it is our entire job in the world to never leave you alone until you act & believe as I do."

I love this idea from Cleve Jones to try to help Andry José Hernández Romero, a gay man abducted by ICE and whisked away to a brutal prison in El Salvador. Organizers of every Pride fest in the U.S. and beyond should immediately name Hernández Romero their Honorary Grand Marshal. Pass it on.

Is basic competence too much to ask for? Apparently, yes.

“One young man sobbed when a guard pushed him to the floor. He said, ‘I’m not a gang member. I’m gay. I’m a barber.’ I believed him. *** He “began to whimper,” as his head was roughly shaved, “folding his hands in prayer as his hair fell.” He “asked for his mother & cried as he was slapped again.”

One columnist, a professional pundit, is living in a paranoid delusion. The other, a sociologist, is living in America.

Texas state rep Stan Gerdes's new bill (HB 4814) would outlaw "nonhuman behavior" in schools, including possession of litter boxes (students will no longer be able to carry their litter boxes to school with their lunch pails); leashes, collars, etc.; animal noises; and—most cruel—licking oneself.

Democrats should play hardball and refuse to vote for ANY budget until the lawbreaking stops. No more illegal impoundments of public money!

I agree--no cooperation from Dems on the budget until the lawbreaking stops. Period.

Dear Jeff Bezos: There was a time when an online bookstore, especially one that was a monopoly, might have been seen as an invaluable service that brought books and many other items to my door. Today, the internet makes it easy to find alternatives to do that job. I've cancelled my Prime membership.
