YES sorry. yes.

When I imagine that world, I see a world in which there are no surprises/discoveries/series of choices that lead somewhere unexpected. /1 (From Reid Hoffman on how AI could make our lives better www.nytimes.com/2025/01/25/o...)

Investors: "So for OpenAI to be profitable you need $500B for a data center" Sam Altman: "Right" Inv's: "Plus $500B for land & water" Altman: "Yes" Inv's: "$1 trillion for the fusion power generator.." Altman: "Uh huh" Inv's: "..which doesn't exist yet.." Altman: "Hence the $20T time machine"

Wow teen vogue really showing up here

People on TikTok are reporting ICE raids happening in small cities in various states. To get past algorithmic censorship, they’re writing down the information on paper and holding up and shuffling through the handwritten signs as they talk about pretend subjects like shopping, food, and animals.

I don’t get…who would want this?

An analysis of two years of episodes by nine prominent podcasters shows how they became mainstream sources for young men and rallied support for Trump's agenda (Bloomberg) Main Link | Techmeme Permalink

Today would have marked 52 years of Roe as the law of the land. But Donald Trump packed the Supreme Court with anti-abortion extremists to get it overturned. This week, he cut off access to reproductiverights.gov. We must keep fighting for women’s rights.

New: Trump officials have paused all external communications at health agencies like CDC, FDA, NIH. No health alerts and the famed MMWRs; no updates to key websites or social media posts. And no indication how long the pause will last. With @rachelroubein.bsky.social + Lena Sun.

One thing before tomorrow: Use your local libraries. Get your card. Borrow books, manga, films, audios, ebooks. Recommend titles for purchase (usually online). Attend promoted activities. Fill out those "How are we doing?" questionnaires. Tell your kids that libraries are good. They are. 📚

"We need leaders not in love with money but in love with justice. Not in love with publicity but in love with humanity." -- MLK Jr., 11/8/56

Ok #booksky, let’s talk. 👎🏼Goodreads, owned by Amazon, fuels its monopoly on books. 👍🏼StoryGraph, a Black woman-owned platform, offers an ethical, ad-free alternative with mood-based recommendations, user control over data, and a focus on inclusivity. Support diversity over corporate power!

For those feeling hopeless and too young to recall, this is exactly the kind of story that proliferated when Ronald Reagan swept into office and then in his second term too. It was exhausting and gross at the time, an orgy of celebration of the very rich: www.wsj.com/politics/pol...

the attack on humanities/social science education, courses, and departments, the removal of books from K-12 libraries, and the rush to AI-ify higher ed all have the same outcome. It's different ways to neutralize knowledge, whether by erasing it or turning it all into bland porridge.

I actually fact-checked this and lmao www.reuters.com/article/us-u...

Just making sure that everyone is aware of this crab that NOAA scientists found

Tiny seedlings growing in frozen soil. (Aster, Liatris, Lupine)

Just had a sample of the Eaton Fire ash that is in my driveway run on the department XRF. Is there titanium (new house paint)? Yup. Lead (old house paint)? You betcha. Heavy metals? Check. Treat that ash like it's toxic folks (because it is)

One day they're going to realise they don't need all these data Centers and that's when the real chaos begins

The Germans and Japanese had entire land armies and navies and airforces and were committing genocides. The Palestinians don’t even have an airport.

If we want to challenge the power of major tech companies, we need to know how they work and be able to properly assess the consequences of their products. This week @jathansadowski.com joins @parismarx.com to explain how to see tech as a Luddite. Full ep: techwontsave.us/episode/259_...

God this is so grim

NEW: All year, Biden set red lines for Israel in Gaza. Israel repeatedly crossed them. There were no serious consequences. Brett Murphy spent the last year examining how, why and what the costs were, for Palestinians, and American credibility. www.propublica.org/article/bide...

Costco has said repeatedly that diversity makes them money. In this Costco is unique. Not that diversity makes companies stronger and better - there's a ton of data on this. But that they aren't so racist that they're willing to leave money on the table to be racist.

israel still occupies Palestine, the iof continues killing Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, and Palestine is not free. even now israel keeps killing, getting their last shots in. i'll be grateful for every day of every life, but this isn't over. Palestine will be free.

“Deaths from bombs and other traumatic injuries during the first nine months of the war in Gaza may have been underestimated by more than 40 percent, according to a new analysis published in The Lancet.”

In federal court, lawyers for Microsoft and OpenAI defended the scraping of news stories to train LLMs and urged the dismissal of news outlets' copyright claims (Josh Russell/Courthouse News Service) Main Link | Techmeme Permalink

The more desperately they attempt to fill LLMs with the total sum of human writing, the more it appears that computers *still* can't replicate the human brain in terms of linguistic output. Like, "we've given this dog a hammer and he still hasn't put up a shelf. Shall we add more hammers?"

Hello, I am Jamal from Gaza. Unfortunately, everything was destroyed in Gaza. My university, my studies, my beautiful city, my dreams, and everything is beautiful. Our lives are also in danger and the destruction is still continuing. You can help me rebuild my life gofund.me/2f77e0ba
