"Are you currently in Belarus?"

#Belarus ⚠️ Content warning: The following thread contains descriptions of sexualised violence and psychological abuse by Belarusian security forces. These stories, reported by Viasna, may be distressing. All names have been changed for safety.

#Belarus According to CNN, the released US citizen is lawyer Yuras Zyankovich, who holds both Belarusian and American citizenship. After his release from Belarusian detention, Zyankovich was taken to neighbouring Lithuania by a team of US officials.

#Belarus Viktoria Kulsha has started her sixth hunger strike - this time, with no end date. “Either she will be released, or she will die,” says former political prisoner Palina Sharenda-Panasiuk, who saw Viktoria just before her own release in February.

When you serve the Kremlin but your knees serve no one.

Yesterday, I joined colleagues from across Europe to discuss the challenges posed by authoritarianism, self-censorship, and the responsibilities we carry as journalists and analysts.

Vladimir, stop. Putin has announced yet another ceasefire to coincide with Russia’s Victory Day on May 9. According to the Kremlin statement, Russian forces intend to halt hostilities from midnight on May 8 to midnight on May 11-a three-day pause. Moscow is calling on #Ukraine to reciprocate.

North Korea has officially confirmed for the first time that it sent combat troops to #Russia to fight against Ukraine, marking a significant escalation in its foreign military involvement.

Looking at these photos from Viciebsk, north-eastern #Belarus. It’s the same story in many of our cities and villages: the Russification of signs and inscriptions, even at historic sites. For many people, there are now almost no opportunities to even hear the Belarusian language.

#Belarus At the start of the video, the two men say: - I hope they won’t jail us. - Nah, worst case, just a fine. They’re talking about installing a transparent plastic "brick" in Minsk to cover a hole in the pavement - a simple act of care.

Autocracies have one fatal flaw: they kill all feedback from society. Elections, parliaments, parties, unions, NGOs, independent media - in #Belarus, all of it has been wiped out. There’s no way for people to speak, and no way for the regime to hear.

The Chernobyl disaster struck 39 years ago on April 26, 1986. Though it happened in #Ukraine, its devastating impact reached deep into #Belarus, contaminating land and poisoning our population.

#Ukraine In Kyiv, teens waited all night by the ruins of a missile-hit house, hoping their 17-year-old friend was alive. By midday, rescuers found his body under the rubble. A journalist broke down on air reporting the tragedy. #Russia keeps targeting civilians - Putin fears peace more than war.

#Russia Newborns at a Kemerovo maternity hospital are being dressed in tiny military uniforms for Victory Day. Nurses sewed these mini caps and cloaks. Starting patriotism from day one - or is this a bit too much cosplay for newborns?

#Belarus For years, the regime has excluded political prisoners from holiday amnesties like Victory Day, unwilling to admit their innocence. Last year saw a handful of releases, but around 1,200 remain jailed.

The body of journalist Viktoria Roshchyna, who died in Russian captivity, has been returned to #Ukraine, the Interior Ministry confirmed. Roshchyna was declared dead in September 2024 in a terse letter from the Russian Ministry of Defence, but her body was not returned until months later.

#Russia launched a massive overnight assault on Kyiv with missiles and drones, killing at least eight people, injuring more than 70, and destroying multiple buildings. Look at the empathy of the rescuers - how deeply they care for those still buried beneath the ruins.

Despite sanctions, nearly half of "sustainably certified" birch wood tested in the UK seems to be from #Russia or #Belarus. Sanctions loopholes & shady supply chains mean that wood labeled as Baltic might actually be funding Moscow. Greenwashing just got literal. www.theguardian.com/environment/...
