I specialised in Modernist poetry back in the day and I'm incandescent that I didn't learn this about Moore until today. "Death of the Author" robbed us of so much context.

Republicans, rabidly: let’s go back a hundred years ago, when women were women, and men were men. 1905: “In all permutations of the family naming, [Marianne] Moore typically referred to herself as male, and is given a male pronoun by both her mother (often) and her brother (consistently).”

The irony here is that in fact I would argue it is correct that Columbia is failing to meet accreditation standards, but for the opposite reason: the violent abrogation of the academic freedom of students and faculty protesting genocide. www.reuters.com/world/us/us-...
