brb submitting a community outreach budget request for green paint, wish me luck

I don’t think a lot of people outside science understand the symbiotic relationship we have between public, private, and educational sectors. We all lean on each other for help, support, and R&D. In most cases, we aren’t competing so much as all rowing different boats in the same direction.

DOGE's new AI, built to scan federal workers' emails to see if they get to keep their jobs, is the latest in a number of AI schemes from Musk. We might scoff at how dumb these ideas are, but the truth is, they're not even supposed to work. They're built to eliminate accountability.

A lot of rich people don't want to admit that a big part of the United States' success in innovation is thanks to government funding & research, and maybe not purely because of their genius-level IQs & unique business acumen.

The tape digitization continues.

"Regardless of style and tactics, everyone in the American scientific community must hold to the principles of independence, peer evaluation, and inclusion...We will not turn our backs on them now." @holdenthorp.bsky.social @science.org YES!!!! www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

This morning at Dept of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) HQ in DC as mandatory return to office began, this video played on loop for ~5 mins on screens throughout the building, per agency source. Building staff couldn’t figure out how to turn it off so sent people to every floor to unplug TVs.

Newsletter: There is no AI Revolution. Consumer adoption of generative AI outside of ChatGPT is barely 100 million people, every single company in generative AI is deeply unprofitable, Microsoft is pulling capex, and OpenAI spent $9bn in 2024 to lose $5bn. www.wheresyoured.at/wheres-the-m...

no one is doing it like gamefaqs ascii artists

Generating VGA video with nothing but logic gates, ASCII text on a 1280x1024 display with an Artix-7 FPGA ( @digilent.bsky.social BASYS3 board ). VGA is EXTREMELY forgiving. With a 100 MHz reference oscillator, 107.4627 MHz (900/8.375) is as close as I can get to a 108 MHz dot-clock. Not a problem.

“If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.” A classic quote from Malcolm X, who was assassinated 60 years ago today.

PROTIP: One should try to be an educational, moderately good influence on students on principle. It's just what you should do. Sometimes those students may, a decade later, send you an assortment delicious teas and cookies. Just because. Thank you, Charlie.

Five volunteers came forward, but one of them went total ham and has sorted 1,200 of them in 3 days.

I’m George Takei and I approve of this message.

The amount of energy that millions of people I'll never meet have put into keeping me safe from things I'll never think about leaves me in an awestruck state of gratitude.

Testing various Ai / LLMs has led me the opposite conclusion. People with advanced degrees (or experience) would easily note mistakes Ai makes, as well as nuanced details it often misses. People stop using Ai when it takes them longer to fix the output than do it themselves in the first place.

Ankh-Morpork, as experienced in the Discworld Mud [ discworld.starturtle.net/lpc/ ], must be the most detailed and expansive text-only city ever created in games. It would however be interesting to experiment with something similar in a single player context too.

ENCYCLOPEDIA [Medium - Success] - The Weiss-Wiesemann coefficient is a ratio designed to reflect the difference in net clout between individuals. When the coefficient is close to 1 (or 100%) it means one person possess all of the net clout among that group of individuals.

I had my students play "Civilization" this week, and used it to talk about historical simulations (they also played "The Oregon Trail", as a very different take on a historical simulation game). (We played Civ 2 because it was easiest to emulate in a browser and use as a homework assignment.)

these guys spent 60 kajillion dollars to make a computer forget how to do math

Holy shit. This is fucking nuts.

George Monbiot’s takedown of Matt Goodwin and the Reform party is a thing of beauty

Last week, visitors had the opportunity to observe our Open Lab and were amazed by our work on extending the lifespan of old monitors and televisions! 🎉 We replaced capacitors, explained why preserving these devices matters, and shared how we make it happen.

Plugged into Europe! 🔌 Estonia 🇪🇪, Latvia 🇱🇻, and Lithuania 🇱🇹 have officially disconnected from the Russian power grid, marking a historic leap towards energy independence ⚡️.

I have been informed that my 2021 book, RESTRICTED DATA: THE HISTORY OF NUCLEAR SECRECY IN THE UNITED STATES, has an 84% off deal today for its Kindle edition ($3.99). Just... passing that on! amzn.to/4hJAdas

I’m going to run a series of posts about the NIH/NSF/etc. troubles concurrently with my usual science posts. I can’t and won’t ignore the former, but I need the latter for mental equilibrium.

Look what I saw today! @needhibhalla.bsky.social @dereklowe.bsky.social

no we do not have this location listed on Airbnb please stop asking

If you want a long, but very thorough, read on just how crazy dangerous the situation is with Elon, @brockm.bsky.social has laid it all out in a single article. Please read it. www.techdirt.com/2025/02/05/t...

So, as a board member at the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing, I think I need to point out that MSN has a content partnership with what appears to be an entirely fake AI site dedicated to spreading climate denial talking points while disguised as climate news.

I’ve unfortunately needed to add more material to my post from yesterday. The re-election of Donald Trump is looking like the biggest act of American self-destruction since the Civil War. Same link, new title and some updates.
