Me again, with another reminder to get those nominations in before Monday please!

This @resfoundation.bsky.social discussion is well worth watching if you're interested in child poverty, or improving social security in the UK. An excellent conversation as well as really useful report: www.resolutionfoundation.org/events/tackl...

Listening to @alexclegg.bsky.social in the @resfoundation.bsky.social event 'Tackling the scourge of modern Britain' exploring different changes in policies affecting child poverty (& 'costs). Be good to add that this would also be an investment & can reduce pressures on other public services.

Today’s social policy seminar starting now. Prof Rod Hick from Cardiff University “work, welfare, and poverty reduction in Europe” @rodhick.bsky.social

A reminder that there's only just over a week left for nominations to the @socialpolicyuk.bsky.social awards: social-policy.org.uk/what-we-do/a... Deadline 5pm Monday 3rd March

Today we held a @ccc-research.bsky.social and Safety Nets supported event called “unpicking the scalar fallacy” at Edinburgh Uni. Excellent presentations and insights from numerous projects. Thanks to all who came!

There's something very worrying happening in HE, including in wealthy Universities such as my own (Edinburgh University). Some are experiencing financial woes due to restrictions placed on international students affecting recruitment numbers. Others, struggling with years of mismanagement.

Council Tax bills are going up for many of us this year. But the tax has become increasingly regressive: the poorest fifth of households spend over three times as much of their income on Council Tax as the richest. @tom-clark.bsky.social & @lalithatry.bsky.social explain buff.ly/3CYK9yo

I wrote for @heraldscotland.bsky.social about why Scotland cannot be complacent about the need for action on child poverty www.heraldscotland.com/politics/vie...

Inflation is up by 3%, but private rents are up by 8.7% across the UK and 11%(!!!) in London. Across GB, it means paying ~£100 more per month on average since Jan 24, or ~£200 more per month since Jan 23. In London, £220 more per month since Jan 24, or ~£400(!) more per month since Jan 23.

Today’s labour market stats show two contrasting trends: the strongest year for pay growth in two decades, but a weakening picture on employment. Our @resfoundation.bsky.social thread (from me and @louisemurphy.bsky.social) …

I’m looking forward to speaking at this fringe event at the Scottish Labour Party conference. If you’re there join us as we discuss what’s needed for a just and compassionate Scotland to really tackle poverty.

What a time to be currently teaching our social policy UGs about administering social security via digital welfare (including discussion data sharing, privacy, rights, etc). www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Is there a word for when you're doing peer review article revisions, & need to return to the editor but you're nervous about how your response will go down: you know what you want the paper to do, have taken some ideas on board, want to say no to others, want to be polite, and have no power!

Why is it more expensive to be poor in Britain? Low-to-middle income households in Britain fare worse than their German. French and Dutch counterparts.

Our next @uoe-sps.bsky.social social policy seminar will be on Friday 21st Feb, 12-2pm. VLR, Edinburgh. Prof Rod Hick @rodhick.bsky.social talking about 'Work, welfare, and poverty reduction in Europe: Lessons from twenty years of change'. No booking required.

Incredible comms from an institution that is 1) not in deficit and 2) has yet to tell any of us transparently how much money we need to save & where & why.

Constantly seeing research & data on how underfunded all our public services are. 10+ years of underfunding also means there's increasing demand (ie NHS or CJ). Local Gov is going bust, & too much social welfare spending is gobbled up by private equity or other (poor value) public outsourcing.

1. The Government's reducing the minimum apprenticeship duration in England from 12 to 8 months, and removing the need for apprenticesh aged 19+ to attain functional English & maths. Many genuinely feel this will widen opportunity & meet employer needs. I don't, so here's a thread to explain.

If meritocracy determines success, how does elite reproduction persist? @larivera.bsky.social examines how hiring at top firms often reinforces privilege rather than rewarding merit. Join her conversation with @durlauf.bsky.social on meritocracy. Listen every other Monday: Website: bit.ly/3YdiCkj
