As translated Japanese literature has taken the Anglophone world by storm in recent years, Bristol Translates 2025 will once again be offering workshops with Morgan Giles and Polly Barton, acclaimed translators of some the best known Japanese works translated into English.

“But a better way forward would be to start celebrating the work of the subtitler; to praise their contribution to the global cinema landscape, and their vital role in bringing stories across borders.”

Samson Chiu's Rose (1992) definitely wouldn't fly today, but it has Maggie Cheung's most likeable performance ever. (She smokes a lot in it too which is the kind of information I think the people want)

ATTN: FILM/LIT/CULTURE PRESS - looking to build a press list from scratch for my new book and other projects in the pipeline. DM me or send an email through my website if you identify as press in any of these areas! I want to get my book to you!

Apropos of nothing, I'm just going to remind people looking for translation services that you should hire HUMANS and these humans should be happy to guarantee that they are translating, not editing machine output.

To translation project managers, you can support autistic translators by setting feasible deadlines and giving all the info we need to do the project at once, in a single email or message #ActuallyAutistic #Xl8 #Translation #Localization

Literary translation is something I really want to do more of, but I did have this short story, "Unnatural" by Tetsuya Okuda (奥田 哲也 「非業」 ), published in the Kurodahan Press collection Vampiric: Tales of Blood and Roses from Japan which it's still not too late to pick up!

Don't forget to pick up your Kurodahan books while you still can!

Is the downfall of a Japanese star a turning point for women's rights?

Last call: the deadline to apply to the 2025 Momentum Grant is 2/28. Early-career translators, don't miss your chance!

Heeeey, the Int'l Booker Longlist is out! I'm especially excited about the two Japanese titles: Hunchback, by Saou Ichikawa (Polly Barton, trans) and Hiromi Kawakami's Under the Eye of the Big Bird (Asa Yoneda, trans) Two amazing books and feats of translation thebookerprizes.com/the-booker-l...

Letting Americans write British characters continues to be a bad idea

I'm looking for recommendations of English-to-Japanese literary (book) translators, and also Japanese-to-English interpreters accustomed to working with journalists. Please tell me if you know someone great (including yourself)! #translation #japanstudies #translators #japaneselanguage

"Next question: how much of your soul are you willing to part with? “Zero” isn’t an option." This, right here, is the big question we all have to ask ourselves every single day. All we can do is try to be the very best version of ourselves in a system that's designed to turn us all into sociopaths.

Mainichi has an English write-up on Shiori Ito's decision to re-edit "Black Box Diaries". The documentary's use of unauthorized footage has been the main barrier to a domestic cinema release. mainichi.jp/english/arti...

Itō Shiori's award-winning documentary BLACK BOX DIARIES still can't be screened in Japan. A group of lawyers - Itō's former attorneys - say she didn't get permission for some of the footage. But is that true? Why are attorneys undermining their own former client?

Vaccines DO NOT cause autism. But what the autistic people in your life hear when you spread that widely debunked misinformation is that you would prefer to have a child die a painful death from eradicated communicable disease than to be like them. That's nasty work. Hope this helps!
