Thank you for providing a shining example of how government can support progressive principles and budget constraints! I honestly hope you stick around IL a while longer, because we need to reify that example so other states can replicate it, creating a long-term legacy that benefits all.

I generally limit my news to 1 hour in the morning and 15 minutes in the evening. Reading rather than watching helps me process less emotionally. If reading it tough given your brain injury, NPR is a good source. Their delivery is very even keeled.

Please correct your headline. This inflation surge was widely expected.

A friend went through the same thing a couple years ago. Recovery took a few months and was rough. She said to avoid screens and anything that requires much thought. Stick to light, fluffy thinking and media consumption. She said it's worth it and can actually lead to interesting new perspectives.

I heard from a well respected economist the other day: "A substantial body of evidence shows better decisions are made when there are people in the room who can approach the problem from different viewpoints. DEI is a tool to ensure those people are in the room, and it's just smart business. "

Another level of fucked up: a friend who's principal at a sped school for kids with severe to profound disabilities had to hold an ICE response training for her staff the other day.

Thanks for the offer. It looks like a food pantry near the building may help out.

I think your observation may say more about media fragmentation than anything else. I've seen nothing about Bass or Newsome's activities and only see Johnson & Pritzer's.

She's reporting the incident to the appropriate immigrant and neighborhood orgs, and we're planning to get the families groceries and essentials so they won't have to step outside for a while. #LoveThyNeighbor

Thanks for your empathy. Most days, there's at least a few moments of rage (thanks, mutant genes!). On better days, there's also gratitude. It's been 5 years since diagnosis: If I'd gotten sick 10 years earlier, I'd probably be dead by now because the treatments (all found by NIH) are that new.

I didn't know either, pre- cancer. For rare cancers like mine (HLRCC), NIH is pretty much the only org doing the research.

I was in high school when the book came out and read it twice. Didn't see the musical because I didn't want to pay the high ticket prices for something that was bound to disappoint. The movie is great- it brought back all those high school feels- and can't wait for it to get HEAVY in part 2.

My first course of treatment had been approved just 2 months before and had 2x the success rate compared to any others at that time. If it had been delayed a few weeks, I would have been put on a much less effective treatment and wouldn't be as healthy as I am today (or could be dead).

Journalists doing the dailies are directed by their bosses to prioritize covering the things that get the most clicks. Please don't give your valuable clicks to the sideshow but to the things that truly matter!

While it looks fully baked from the outside, it was a bit underbaked on the inside. Still, it makes phenomenal French toast.

As a cancer patient completely dependent on NIH research and communications with my oncologist to continue living, this is pretty damn scary.

Folks on my block are slowly catching on, and a few have planted small native gardens. A new neighbor is f*@#ing their lawn and doing all natives. I think the best thing to encourage it is to keep providing a good example and keep sharing those seeds. 😊

Chicago gardener here! The front yard is a Woodland garden, the backyard is a mix of food producing plants and natives, and I also took over the neighbor's yard and planted natives with some veg. (The dream is to gradually take over the whole block. Mwahahaha!)

Agreed! Dr Kim is fantastic. My teeth were a mess after 10 yrs w/o dental insurance. She created a manageable plan to fix my mouth and got it all done as I could handle it.

For fellow Chicagoans who are worried they, loved ones, or neighbors may be impacted by the coming raids: here are some resources.
