Paging @nationaltrust.bsky.social & @celiarichardson.bsky.social - courtesey of Manchester Archives, here's a 50 year old membership card belonging to Shena Simon, feminist pioneer, big National Trust fan, and distant relation of a certain Miss Potter! Such chic membership cards in the 70s...

Such a special day at work. Talking all things plague, 17th century lockdowns, myths, folklore and community. It has to be Eyam...

a week in the Peak ❤️

@manchesterup.bsky.social are too kind, sending me three stunning advance copies to get my teeth into. Starting the week with Wildly Different by @sarahjlonsdale.bsky.social, a book that I've been very much looking forward to!

16 February 1753 Jacobite Thomas Deacon died. His tomb, in St Ann’s churchyard, Manchester declares him ‘the greatest of sinners’. The head of his son, executed for his role in the 1745 Rebellion to reclaim throne, was displayed on Manchester Exchange as a warning to potential traitors.

Beatrix Potter's 'The Tale of Two Bad Mice' comes to life at her former farmhouse, Hill Top in Cumbria 🐭 Over 300 hours of conservation work has recently been carried out on Potter's former doll's house, which has seen scenes from the 1904 novel come to life 🧵

In heaven seeing this portrait of Elizabeth Craven depicting the most deliciously beautiful 17th century embroidery. Butterflies, flowers, bugs and birds feature in the design. Imagine if the dress had survived? 🦋 🐛🐌🌺🐞 Powis Castle, @nationaltrust.bsky.social

#OTD 1918, The Representation of the People Act received royal assent. The Act gave the parliamentary vote to some women for the first time as well as millions of previously excluded working men. This article by @emmapeplow.bsky.social explains all:

Calling all #Manchester #history friends - please do join us at the Mechanics for the Margaret Ashton Lecture. We love celebrating women's lives across Greater Manchester who so often are overshadowed - Shena Simon was a true trailblazer and we can't wait to champion her story! t.co/4R9TS2dsuB

I'm writing about a special place on the shores of Derwentwater for an upcoming talk. Dreaming of being there & living through #BeatrixPotter's Derwentwater sketchbook, painted on holiday of 1903. Exquisite. www.nationaltrustcollections.org.uk/object/242727 @nationaltrust.bsky.social

Bruising and distressing. Thinking of the EH staff and volunteers who'll be hugely affected by this. A reminder to support and champion your favourite/local heritage sites. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...

Labour MPs who follow me on here — I know you’re there! — please do push for this change of 6 weeks pat leave at 90% of pay. And please also push for an increase in statutory maternity pay — to minimum wage! — and for pay to cover the full 12 months of leave.

Thanks for all the kind messages after yesterday's wobble. 💙 The “Heart Book” from c.1550 is a collection of 83 Danish love ballads collected at the court of King Christian III. It's the oldest known Danish manuscript of its kind, and an early example of the heart signifying romantic love.

If you're local to Manchester, love radical women's history & a cup of tea, you'll want to join me at the Mechanics Institute for a celebration of the incredible Shena Simon, a pioneer of women's rights, education & housing. FREE, booking required!

Recently catologued two of the most interesting and unique election campaign materials I've ever come across - party dresses worn by Phyllis & Marjorie Hervey during their father's campaign for the Bury-St-Edmunds seat in 1906. The case for Tariff Reform painted onto a 6yr old's dress...

My book, 100 Things to Wear: Fashion From the Collections of the National Trust (co-authored with the incredible Emma Slocombe) is now available to pre-order on Amazon. I'll be buying all my copies from my local @nationaltrust.bsky.social shop, but this is really hugely exciting to see!

it's another totally normal day in the countryside

I am having a true pinch me moment!!! Delighted, thrilled, overjoyed to announce that I'm joining the phenomenal National Trust podcast as their newest history presenter! 🎙️ 🎧 Stay tuned for the series 9! www.nationaltrust.org.uk/discover/vir...

I'm interested to hear from museums, galleries, archives and heritage org colleagues about their plans for the 2026 centenary of the General Strike. Who is marking this significant anniversary and how?

Are you an archive, museum or heritage group commemorating the 1926 General Strike centenary in 2026? Newcastle University Oral History Unit & Collective and the Labour & Society Research Group are seeking to understand the legacy. See how you could participate… 👉🏼 blogs.ncl.ac.uk/commemoratin...

I've set myself a challenge to read 50 books this year! This is book no.2 and the 98th book I've checked out of ny local library since joining in Jan 2023. Any recommendations, send them my way.

The National Trust turns 130 this year! While celebrating our past, we're focused on the future. This new strategy is our plan for the next decade, shaped by feedback from 70,000 partners, members, visitors, volunteers and staff asking, 'How can we serve you?' Here it is: https://buff.ly/40upATu

Since 1895, protecting nature and heritage has been the very purpose of the National Trust. 130 years later, this mission continues to guide us 🌲 Have a read of our ambitious plans to transform over 250,000 hectares of land as we celebrate our 130th anniversary - buff.ly/429tSRh

In 2022 I co-curated an exhibition at the V&A, and in 2024, I'm reading the new Jaqueline Wilson book only to find said exhibition gets a cameo 😭😭😭 Ellie loved the exhibition about Beatrix Potter! I cannot handle it!

Before a morning of looking at beautiful altar cloths, I went out walking with a very good long lad to gaze at squirrels
