Today is the feast of Isidore of Seville! Several MSS to share of the 1000+ that survive; I'll put them in separate posts. St. Gall 226 consists of surviving leaves of a *papyrus* codex from later 7th-c. southern France! This is the only papyrus MS in the St. Gall Stiftsbibliothek. 🧵#medievalsky

Cosplaying We're Still Roman so hard c. 700 in southern France that they sourced papyrus!

Enough internet. Time to cheer myself up by writing about how dark energy will eventually destroy the universe.

Ok it turns out things could be worse

I just keep thinking about how all this defunding of NEH is just destroying everything about the next generation of scholars. It’s not that we can’t preserve our current work, it’s that training folks and supporting innovative work in the future will be so much harder. Its just devastating

A student to me earlier “this is fun, cause now I’m panicking about my future at the same time my professors are also panicking”. I mean…. Yes

My heart is genuinely breaking to hear about all the NEH programs being cancelled. What stupidity. Devastation. And will cause damage for a generation.

If you are an MAA member and your NEH or IMLS funding is at risk or has already been revoked, please email me. I don't know what, if anything, MAA can do to help you, but we will absolutely try. #MedievalSky

Groups across the country have received letters notifying them that their grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities have been canceled, raising alarms about serious harm to museums, historical sites, and a wide range of community projects.

I’ve never not worked under fear of not being able to continue paying for my education, continue laboring in the field in which I was trained, or continue to have security within the institution at which I am presently employed.

before we realized that the reason that I was feeling off was that I had covid, my sister started throwing her children's shoes at me when I acted like I was going to sleep. My partner (only Child) doesn't understand how this means I have won all sibling arguments for the future now

Please see this incredible CFP from Binghamton. In this moment, it feels especially important to study histories that might be less supported in the future. Always Here: Non-Binary Gender, Trans Identities, and Queerness in the Global Middle Ages (c. 250–1650) www.binghamton.edu/cemers/confe...

NEH cuts have made it to the NYT, but still not much detail. Estimated staffing cuts are now 70-80%, along with cancellation of current grants. (My assumption is that the latter will get challenged in court, as with NSF.) Gift link: www.nytimes.com/2025/04/01/a... #NEH #DigitalHumanities

The IMLS effective shutdown is illegal and devastating.

If you, like me, are looking for firm details on what’s happened so far at NEH, here’s a list of programs that are marked as discontinued or cancelled on the website. This is a snapshot - I’m sure this the impacts will grow as more cuts unfold throughout the day. #NEH #DigitalHumanities

Even in the ancient world, people bought derelict properties to renovate or tear down. A man named Mushezib-Marduk bought a ruined house in the Eanna district of Uruk in 669 BCE. It's in the same neighbourhood where writing was first developed almost three millennia earlier.

In the 14th century, someone who didn't have a highlighter handy thought to use octopus tentacles to mark the most important parts. I love it so much (Manuscript from the Bankcroft library, UC Berkeley)

Turns out Le Pen is not mightier than the fraud.

Please stay safe today. There have been reports of Republicans resorting to violence against peaceful protesters. If you witness anything suspicious, record video and report it immediately.

Today is the feast of St. John Climacus, d. 649, author of the Scala Paradisi. BNF Coislin 263 is a copy of that work written in 1059 per to its colophon (the black and red text page with geomentric layout in the third pic). I have a #codicology q for those of you who know Greek MSS...🧵

Turning up in a ridiculous horned ‘Viking helmet’ was the last straw for the rest of the historical reenactment society. That evening, Jack was asked to leave the group for good - 14th century, Bodleian Library MS. Douce 211, f. 59v

Future scientists. The late 2020s? Sorry we don’t have data for that.

Look I don’t want to minimise the difficult position university leaders are in. But I do want university leaders to believe in and seek solidarity with their students, faculty, and staff.

When friends call to check in when they learn you are sick, some call and offer to bring soup. Some call to tell you that they’ve discovered their Sanskrit isn’t good enough for epics but it is good enough for practical things like reading spells (and offer to send soup)

you know if nothing else, the endless executive orders are making me care so much more about how precisely I craft my syllabus for my history of the English language class.

I am somehow sick AGAIN so I am going to look up all the bat shit crazy medical explanations that I can find on the internet to text every friend who works or has worked in health care (including my partner) that I have found the explanation for my illness. For funsies.

Chicago is such a wild concept. Ok sure millions of people living in a perfectly flat swamp prairie next to a fake ocean. Definitely sounds like something that exists.

Just having a casual, genuine conversation if we can use the word "ethical" in a grant. ethical. ETHICAL

Giving a talk at my undergrad institution, then one of my long term friends takes me yo my college bar. Life is weird

I got up at 3 am to fly half way across the country to give a talk this evening. I don't read from notes when I give a talk. WHAT COULD GO WRONG

Wearing heels in the airport always seems mildly insane, but in Denver ? Like, fancy here is your good running shoes, why is that necessary ?

Giving a talk at my alma mater tonight and feeling extremely nostalgic. If you’re in Chicago and feel like listening to me rant about imaging and medieval manuscripts (for something new and different), come on by to Loyola this afternoon
