So true! My kids want my name now but I told them best to use it as a preferred name now and wait until 18, when they don’t need paternal consent. But then the birth certificate will have to be corrected if they keep up this crazy birth certificate stuff.

The chances are very low after bilateral salpingectomy, meaning removing both tubes, much less than 1%, more effective than other tubals. But not impossible. Viable pregnancy is even lower.

Working in practice the past 10+ years I have learned so much from my patients. Sometimes surgery is the safest and best choice. And the patient’s values and desires are what matter after counseling. For fertility, I would also encourage salpingectomy as a great option if no fertility is desired.

I hate that for you. You’re not wrong - medicine is definitely a field where mentorship is crucial. I personally trained at an institute where the large majority of attending were older men. The teaching was strict about offering hysterectomy.

Surgery when needed is a great option and offered without our moral judgement about maintaining fertility, but risks/benefits/alternatives - we should counsel and allow patients’ autonomy to choose, but we definitely need our medical interventions which are less invasive to still be an option.
