I don't actually know how much correlation there is between 'prof' and 'Democrat', even though there's a pretty obvious correlation between 'stupid' and 'Republican'.

I reminded myself of that recently after realizing how many Democrats don't even get why Canadians are so pissed off at the US.

Flying earwigs is brand new information to me, and I think I need to lie down.

There's oat production across the country, but it's definitely concentrated in Saskatchewan and neighbouring provinces. I guess that partly explains the origins of Red River cereal. www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/pub/95-63...

Dialect and image differences aside, you could almost imagine the same words coming out of Doug Ford or Pierre Poilievre.

Is this regarding Men in Blazers?

The high school is about a block from where I used to live. I knew he was from Hamilton, but I didn't realize he lived so close to our old house.

I spent way too much time a little while ago trying to locate an auto-saved file. Wrote this for a different context, but it applies here. bsky.app/profile/hewe...

🤔 - I can't think of any places around here with a limit of anything less than 40. It's really hard to resist even at higher speeds. As I said later in the thread, it's so common, I have an unproven hypotheses that they deliberately set the speed limits lower because they know people will speed.

The Ookpik Waltz by Frankie Rodgers of Alberta has a fair amount of spread. It's popular in American fiddling, though they play it at a slower tempo than the original. www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2Iw...

The other major western Canadian fiddle tradition(s) I knew about is/are Old Native and Métis via Anne Lederman. www.annelederman.com/cd_manitoba....

I do know there are fiddlers in BC, but everything I knew up until today was people playing music from other traditions (Irish, 'east coast', etc.). This is the first substantial thing I've seen about local BC traditions.

The USA is not the only country with states as subdivisions, of course. Australia, Mexico, India, and The Federated States of Micronesia are other examples. But it's the one most familiar to Canadians, and to the best of my knowledge, the only one that goes simply by 'The States'.

Usually, when I say 'state', I mean the former. But when I read 'Canada is not a state', my mind goes to the latter in addition to the former.

As I read the post you reboosted, I was thinking "there goes the constitution". If the Republicans think the constitution is an obstacle to their desired laws, they will clear the obstacle before changing their desires.

This one is extreme though. 5 holidays? Something tells me you're not taking about 5 long weekends at a campground.

There's a whole genre of articles along the lines of "I make boatloads of cash, many times more than the average person, but due to spending much of it on things I don't need, I can't afford other things I don't need. Please help."

Huh - this might be the first time I've ever heard of anyone getting a ticket for exceeding the speed limit by less than 15km/h and not having it bumped down.
comment in response to post
Yeah. I wonder how much of that is just cops using their discretion vs any kind of formal legal thing. Suppose a cop was in a mood and decided to give you a ticket for going 5 over. Could you use the grace enforcement area as a defence to get the ticket dismissed?
comment in response to post
I do not know a single person who was caught speeding for anything less than 15 over. I've heard you can be driving 25 over and they still won't stop you. Given how long this has been going on, the law in practice is much more lenient than the law on paper, and it begins to look the the real law.
comment in response to post
Maybe they have a point though? I know lots of people who get speeding tickets for 15 over when in reality they were going a fair bit more than 15 over. If you're sufficiently contrite, the cop will knock it down for you, so you don't lose points.

Then speed cameras come along, and they're much less forgiving. You can't charm them out of a ticket, because they're not charmable and you don't find out until you get the ticket in the mail. So people find out that they're not allowed to do what they thought they were allowed to do and get angry.
