I'm a nobody with a regrettable knack for snarky replies but few original post ideas. It's REALLY not worth it to follow me. But I'm a 40-something F, former musician/teacher, current editor. Left on some issues, center-left on others, always individual.

I also don't know how long we'll have a free press. I will support them for now, while I can. Criticize them and hold them to high standards, sure, but don't discard them completely. There are still a lot of talented people there, and at NPR of course, and I know they're working their tales off.

Thank you for your defense of editors, from an Editorial Freelancers Association member. :) And I agree with you. I see people saying they'll never give another dime to NYT or WaPo, and I understand their criticisms. But at the same time, this is not the time to be picky and purist. They're trying.

I am surprised that she admitted that, and wonder how that admission came about. His Mango Majesty won't be pleased.

Listen to your instincts. We have to look out for ourselves because large swaths of the country do not give a flying fig.

It's a military nickname, like "Sarge."

Isn't it kind of on all of us, though? I wouldn't expect them to get arrested if I'm not also prepared to get arrested. It just feels like everyone is waiting for someone else to "do something."

It's partly that Democrats never have as many wealthy donors as Republicans, and it's partly a test of your ability to fundraise in general, which is a large part of being a politician. (For better or for worse). If you can get past the hurdle of asking friends for money, you might stand a chance.

I have noticed, in my state, that people with little political experience but who are long-time TEACHERS seem to have an easier time getting elected than those who aren't. So all of you teachers out there, consider it.

That sounds intriguing, but I can't imagine that would be effective very often. These people have aides to keep them on top of deadlines. But I like the subversive element of that idea.

Not Bill Burr. Are you familiar with his comedy? I think he's a really funny guy, one of the funniest around, but quite a few of his past jokes could really be used against him. He can be pretty anti-feminist, for one. We also don't need more celebrities (sports guys, comedians) in politics.

I want to be totally clear that I'm not shaming you for making money from an OnlyFans page. It's tough out there for women, and if you found an income stream that works for you and you're not hurting anyone, more power to you. It's just not the kind of engagement I associate with BlueSky.
comment in response to post
No judgment, but you're trying to get people to join your OnlyFans. I don't think people are joining BlueSky for that type of engagement. People are here trying to connect with like-minded resistors, not with a self-described "big boob lady." It's not the right site for that. But I wish you well.

Of course he's connected to a Trump family business. They're nothing if not predictable.

Why are both social media links in the story links to X? Aren't there any other (less terrible) sites where the local police and the governor make announcements?

As much as I feel sorry for myself, I'm headed towards 50 and I had a mostly good run. I feel REALLY bad for young people just starting out in their educations or their careers. What a thing to have happen when you have the rest of your life to look forward to.

Thanks. Guy's name is Larry LoSchiavo. Apparently he was doxxed and fired in NJ in 2017 for his behavior, then moved to Mount Pocono PA. He ran a GoFundMe to finance the move. He seems to have a mixed-race child or grandchild. Poor kid.

I love Slower Lower—people are just nicer down there—except for that aspect of it.

I go through my old replies periodically and delete a bunch of them. Just in case it's ever bought by someone like that, someone who would then use my comments against me.

I'm sorry. People don't realize that these policies don't just affect those on Medicaid, but also their caregivers. All of the adult children who are dealing with the needs of teenagers and elderly parents at once, as one example.

Chill. It's just one man's take, and it happens to be one of the few points that hasn't already been made again and again on this platform. He's also doing what a good humorist does: using levity to point out something (the actual salutes) people need to know about. I know we're all on edge. Peace.

It's the biggest insult that they say the cuts were based on performance, or because the person got the job for the wrong reasons. It's not enough for them to fire these people—they have to invalidate their whole careers.

Follow-up: I'm officially still immune to mumps, measles, and rubella, though my rubella score was on the low end of the range. I haven't heard about any rubella outbreaks, so I guess I'll live with that risk. Next I'll get a tetanus booster. Apparently it's recommended that you get it every 10 yrs

I would bet that the people at the meeting did not actually vote for this. Those people are sitting at home, avoiding the news and telling themselves everything is fine. And I don't agree that the entirety of a swing state should be punished.
comment in response to post
Obviously. No one is being literal when they say it's a documentary. It's tongue-in-cheek humor.

Internet access has been weaponized because they know we're all hooked. It's Mad Max, but with the internet instead of H2O.

His blocking of Obama's late-term SCOTUS pick caused so much damage. I just said to someone else that we can't be too picky about our allies, but this guy—this guy can rot.
comment in response to post
We're in no position to reject allies because they don't have a career we approve of. It's not news that the highest ranks of the military are conservatives. But if they're willing to speak out and put their necks on the line for our democracy, we need their help. The left alone is not enough.

Found the MAGA bro (based on not just this comment, but posting history). Evidently he thought he was going to come to Bluesky and change minds/redirect us from the truth with his comments. His ilk are used to MAGA people who are easily led and don't do their own research or critical thinking.

Overwhelmingly the one on the bottom. Why are you so threatened by heterosexuals being okay with their gay neighbors and friends (or constituents) being free to love who they want to love?

Now they need to investigate if one of the other young guys won a hacking competiton with the theme of "influencing an election." That's the rumor; I'd like to know if it's true.
comment in response to post
Possibly?? You KNOW it will be a white man who's far less qualified. By design. They want it to feel like a slap in the face.

Wait, which? Scaling back or staying firm on DEI?

People don't really read the history book past the whole "let them eat cake" quote and its immediate consequences.

It may not have been the point of your post, but it's offensive, and you need to hear that it is. I will never not tell my story of why I took on a different name when I run up against attitudes like this.
comment in response to post
THANK YOU. Exactly what I said. I'm so sick of people making us out to be Stepford Wives because we made a different choice.
comment in response to post
Stop implying that those of us who made a different choice than you did are all sheltered little rule followers. That's so condescending. This is like when women judge other women for quitting a job to raise a child. The beauty is that anyone can make the choice that's right for them.
comment in response to post
Please stop judging women for exercising their CHOICE. Having an option is nice. My maiden name sucked, and was only the name of my dad's adoptive father who abused him. I couldn't wait to switch it out for my husband's elegant name, and I'd do the same thing in a heartbeat.

People that voted for lower prices are really gonna be crying soon. I work at a big box store doing price changes. In the last two days I've done hundreds of price changes going up between 10-33%. Everything from coffee to salad dressing to shampoo going up from .50 to $1. Be prepared to pay more.

Ugh. I'm so sorry we inflicted these people on the world.

I know it's a joke and I'm sorry to be "that guy," but bird populations have been in serious decline, and that's overwhelmingly due to cats in the outdoors. Just sharing this graphic in case someone out there didn't realize this.

According to NPR, you can get the vaccine even without a blood test showing that your immunity has faded. You don't necessarily need to know; another vaccine isn't going to hurt (according to the doctor they interviewed). My local CVS had given me the impression you need to get the test first.

Just be careful that you're donating to an actual alt site run by current/former federal employees. There's one called @altyellonatpark that is straight up scamming people. They've raised like $60,000, but have never been parks employees. www.nationalparkstraveler.org/2018/07/upda...

It honestly reminds me of the middle stage of my mother's dementia, when she would have a dream, think it was real, and describe this thing that she thought had really happened to her.
comment in response to post
People have really taken that quote out of context. the meaning wasn't "don't fight," it was "fight smarter than them." If they're coming at you with kindergarten insults, come back at them with calm, cool, collected facts. THAT'S what that quote meant.

That's such a beautiful feature of SF. To an East coast visitor, it's so nice that you can take an afternoon away from all of the urban sites to just take a scenic, natural hike, all without even leaving the city.
