It was my immense pleasure to talk with @zachpowers.bsky.social at the Writer's Center about writing, dead bodies, and why "what's your process?" is the most futile question in the world!

“We have not yet encountered any god who is as merciful as a man who flicks a beetle over on its feet.” Annie Dillard "Pilgrim at Tinker Creek" #SundaySentence #Booksky 💙📚

Complying with EOs now means the Trump regime doesn’t have to legislate. Make them pass the damned laws.

For The Rumpus I wrote about living in 19 different places and my fears about how my art might change if I end up settling down in one spot.

Phillies spring training on the TV & pitch by pitch updates on my phone for LVC baseball. Small good things.

Donald Trump and Elon Musk have fired “multiple FAA lawyers whose job was to help prevent pilots with drug and alcohol problems from getting in the cockpit.” Musk and Trump want you to die in an airplane crash. www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol...

I heard the NEA is only considering proposals related to 1776 & the USA’s 250th birthday & I was feeling intensely patriotic, so I’m printing these really big posters inspired *directly* by the Founding Fathers The cut was carved from the masthead of a 19th century newspaper

504 plans are how kids can carry EpiPens or make sure their classroom is peanut free. It’s how kids with diabetes can use insulin. It’s how kids with mobility issues can have more passing time or use an elevator. An attack on 504 is an attack on everyone. Listen to @lollardfish.bsky.social.

Hello, all. Usually Craig does the heavy lifting on promotion, but today I felt like I should take a turn. We have a lot of great stuff up on the site today, and I wanted to take a minute to share it all.

Love seeing this kind of research happening by a fellow Binghamton-ite! #gamestudies

I talked to developers about Microsoft's newly announced generative AI model, Muse, and its role in video games: "When we rely on this stuff we are implicitly empowering a class of people who own these tools and don’t give a fuck about how they reshape our lives." www.wired.com/story/xbox-m...

Trans people were on the front lines at Stonewall. Don't let Trump, Musk, or a bunch of Vichy gays and TERFs tell you otherwise. My latest for Slate on what happened to the Stonewall monument website, why autocrats always destroy history, and where it can lead slate.com/news-and-pol...

People don't realize how lazy GenAI use makes 99.9% of users. We've watched real-time as students (and professors) cheating with it has gotten lazier and lazier. Something like "checking the references" just isn't going to happen. We'll see things devolve rapidly unless there are consequences.

Every day it seems like another person I know casually admits to using ChatGPT for something and I feel like I’m losing my grip. Was it really that hard to Google things?

You can't offload "low-skill" parts of the writing process to an LLM, because there are no low-skill parts of the writing process

Musk named his little project DOGE. He's absolutely steeped in memes and online garbage. Of course he knows what 14 means when he posts those flags. Delete your Twitter.

A BBC study just found that generative AI can't even generate news story synopses with any consistent accuracy, and here we are happily pretending it's a symmetrical replacement for education and experience

Favorite paragraph from this:

Yup. Generative AI is shady, thieving shit that's also environmentally-destructive. Kick it to the curb with vigor and disdain.

Honoring Elizabeth Peratrovich, Tlingit civil rights activist, today and her powerful words: "Asking you to give me equal rights implies that they are yours to give. Instead, I must demand that you stop trying to deny me the rights all people deserve."

The university that declares “We are not throwing trans kids under the bus, we are not ending diversity and inclusiveness efforts, and we are not opening our doors to ICE agents” would not only be uniquely heroic but would be doing some strong branding work on the cheap.

hey guys the only canada vs usa hockey I've watched in the last decade has been on the women's side. can someone fill me in on which ones are married to each other

We're publishing some sneak previews from the upcoming @barrelhouse.bsky.social print issue 25 (pre-order available now). Here's the Dear Reader letter, about how we truly did not know a single thing when we started, but somehow we're still here 20 years later. www.barrelhousemag.com/blog/issue-2...

A thing you can do today: call your state AG if they're part of the group trying to end the ADA. Tell them disabled people matter and the ADA is imoortant. Find their info at reps.fyi. 👇

80+% of the summary "services" provided by AI could just be done better by teaching people they can use find commands in readable text I KNOW that this sounds obvious but if you're an instructor, poll your students! They don't know this!

Loved this book! Take advantage of the sale and put a couple of coins in the pocket of one of our own #5amWritersclub members.

BREAKING: A federal court temporarily blocked President Trump’s executive order aiming to restrict access to gender-affirming medical care for transgender people under age 19 nationwide. This is a major victory for our freedom to access life-saving care.

For @literaryhub.bsky.social I wrote about the fear of speaking up against Trump and Musk's fascism, especially if you receive any kind of federal funding, and that it is our job as writers and editors to reclaim their banned words and ideas to fight back for those who can't.

"Gulf of America" is just a loyalty test. It's a way of checking who is going to abrogate reality for no reason other than a cowardly refusal to stand up to the bully or an opportunistic willingness to toady up to one. Anyone who will call it that will help you round people up or look the other way.

I need some volunteer readers for @fracturedlit.bsky.social ! We prefer that readers have had some experience publishing flash, so keep that in mind!

I did my MA at Ohio University. This "overhaul bill," like all such bills, is a travesty.

17 states are suing to overturn section 504. www.bazelon.org/wp-content/u...

This sounds amazing!

SO excited for this one! For it to come out, for y'all to read it, to get to work with @autofocusbooks.bsky.social again.

I love my local library so much I joined the board! I grew up without a local public library, and now I borrow ebooks for travel, play trivia, and pick up summer reading faves. I help students get internships there, & I meet new people!

Eight outfielders signed deals in the past couple of days, five of them with new teams. I wrote about the carousel that is the lower end of the position-player market, and the pity that few guys get to build fan clubs.

My book IT ALL FELT IMPOSSIBLE is now available for pre-order. I wrote a short essay for every year of my life so far. Elisa Gabbert says: "This book is so funny and honest" Hanif Abdurraqib calls it "A beautiful portrait of a slow and tender passage of time." rosemetalpress.com/books/it-all...

“A lot of queer and trans people resent being forced to come up with a cohesive narrative. I don’t want to be representative. I don’t want to be the one voice. I don’t want to be pinned down.” Novelist Andrea Lawlor talks with Spencer Quong:

The correct number of AI-generated books in a library system is "fucking none."

Breaking news: State attorneys general from California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Nevada, Vermont, and Wisconsin advise Trump's EO banning trans care is unlawful, hospitals should provide care. Big counter salvo!

This morning's writing lesson: Despite all my best efforts, I still write like myself. It's time to stop wishing I was some other writer and just do my thing. Truly hope you're out there doing your thing too.
