Great to watch the USC Women's basketball team go into Pauley Pavilion & once again be the only team to have beaten the Bruins this year. USC owns UCLA, the city of LA, & the B1G! JuJu Watkins is amazing to watch, the team plays tough, & I love what Coach Gottlieb has done with the program! #FightOn

PG&E is doing planned electrical work in my neighborhood today. From the online outage map, I am one house away from being unaffected -- next door & behind my back wall are fine. Am working from the local municipal building for the day, which was fine until the dance class with loud music began.

Tonight's entertainment. I've heard some things, and I have very low expectations for this one.

A bit of good news, with a judge finding that copyright protections apply, even against AI training models! www.avclub.com/ai-thomson-r...

And the Civilization VII Early Access "install" button has been activated 4 hours earlier than promised. If anyone needs me, I'll be busy for the next week or so. #JustOneMoreTurn

Always fun when power goes out during a big, windy rainstorm. Double extra fun when the UPS's start beeping, and when we have a dog who gets even more terrified of electronic beeping than he does from fireworks.

And tonight is our final show of this year's SF Sketchfest, the always wonderful @mariabamford.bsky.social! I've been looking forward to this event! @sfsketchfest.bsky.social

At Club Fugazi to see Jonathan Colton, Despite Paul and Storm, which is a great name for an event. I hope I end up liking these up-and-comers! If so, maybe I'll find myself on a boat with them someday! @paulandstorm.bsky.social @jonathancoulton.bsky.social @sfsketchfest.bsky.social @mollylewis.wtf

OpenAI right now

It's the 39th anniversary of the Challenger explosion. I still remember the horror of the event, and I still admire the bravery of those astronauts and all who choose to push the boundaries of human knowledge in such amazing ways. www.usatoday.com/story/news/n...

It's been awhile, but I finally remembered to make a blood donation today (Double Red Cells)! I always feel better after a good bloodletting. I forgot to take a picture while hooked up to the machine, but here's the aftermath.

After the show today, I realized that I was near one of San Francisco's newest parks, Tunnel Tops, and it was a great opportunity to check it out. I'm glad I did, as the park is terrific and the views are unparalleled. I love living near this city!

It really saddens me that the Presidio doesn't have free-range volunteers and instead keeps them locked up in a small trailer without natural light or even room to stretch.

That was fantastic! It was cool to see Jerry Zucker and Robert Hays (and others) have genuine laughs during the reading. Such a funny script, and even better when there is such a talented group of performers!

At the lovely Palace of Fine Arts this afternoon to see the live table read celebrating the 45th anniversary of Airplane! Robert Hayes and "surprise guests" will be participating. Should be an amazing experience! I love SF Sketchfest!

Tonight, I experienced the occult. And by that, I mean I saw the Moon occulting Mars. This is a lovely photo that isn't quite sharp enough to see Mars just to the bottom-left of the Moon. (Sadly, though it's a lovely picture, the phone camera wasn't good enough for you to me able to see Mars)

Tonight is our first show of the year. A musical which I can only assume is about battles over the thermostat.

The dog loves chicken & fish, that makes sense. He'll come running at the sound of the word "jerky." Quite understandable for a canine. What we learned this week that's rather more unexpected is that one of his absolute favorite foods is sourdough bread!? Possibly even more than those other treats.

I think we can work with the wildfires and come to a bipartisan agreement

1/ RE Meta's decision to abandon fact-checking (and follow the lead of other platforms taking a similar hands-off approach), it's not great. But we have seen this movie before in media history and it's probably more instructive to anticipate what this moment creates. ...

Fact-checking wasn’t “biased” against conservatives. Conservatives just shared more false content. If there’s a sportsball game and one team fouls four times as much, it’s not “biased” for the ref to call four times as many fouls against that team.

Woo-hoo! I'm now 2 for 2 on getting first class upgrades since I got frequent flyer status last week! I can get used to the extra space and amenities while flying! (Cue Seinfeld's "More everything!" from the episode where he flew first class)

The hotel had an interesting way of celebrating the new year; the building fire alarm went off 4 times between 3 am and 9 am, each time for 2-3 minutes. Just long enough to ensure that I was wide awake and the adrenaline was pumping. Not the start to 2025 that I was hoping for.

Happy New Year from Albuquerque, NM! May we all find good things to bring us joy in 2025!

The long arid nightmare is over; the plumbing company finally came out and fixed the leak (they only gave an estimate on Fri). I had applied patch epoxy on Fri that slowed the gush to a drip. Gwen (who is watching the house) had to manage things, but it got done and our plumbing is back to normal!

It's interesting travelling with a dog who is experiencing "normal" things that aren't what he's used to. There is a big mirror in the room, & we happened to set Frodo's dishes next to it. He isn't used to seeing himself in a mirror; he's stared at his reflection while eating, & also growled at it.

I reached silver status in United's frequent flyer program on Thursday. Today, I got my first free upgrade to first class for Wander, Frodo, & my trip to Albuquerque! Frodo isn't thrilled to be imprisoned in his travel carrier, but this is an exciting adventure for us all, & off to a great start!

Well, 2024 is going out with a bang. Unfortunately, that "bang" was the sound of the water pipe into to the house springing a leak at 11pm last night! Luckily, it was just past the shut-off valve, & I should be able to get someone out today to fix it. But until then, we are a waterless household.

After getting home from spending 4 days in Toronto going to a real office, I am wiped out. I hadn't realized how much I: 1.) Missed regularly going to an office and seeing people again and 2.) Have gotten out-of-practice at ongoing "peopling," thus requiring so much more effort just to interact.

The fact that Disney bought Star Wars and bought the Muppets and haven’t done a Muppets Star Wars is a crime.

As I ordered an airport Uber to start the trip back home, I got an automated Tsunami alert for San Mateo county!?! A big earthquake off the coast of the northern part of California has raised concern about a potential situation. Made me consider if braving the snow here would be a better choice!

When discussions of winter (and my having left PA, where they do get real weather) arise, I always respond that I miss the first snow of the season, but am glad I don't have to deal with more than that. I've gotten my first snow of the year with this trip to Toronto. And I'm ready to head home now.

around 42% of all marriages end in divorce. that is a very high regret rate for people committing to life changing decisions. the state should do something, ultimately we should ban marriage entirely

Final work trip of the year; I am currently in a hotel in Mississauga (just outside of Toronto) getting ready to spend 4 days in a real, actual business office. I hope I remember how to appropriately socialize for that long! #OfficeLife #ReminderOfHowEveryDayUsedToBe

USC vs. UCLA is always a gorgeous-looking game, whether it is in the Coliseum or in our secondary home, the Rose Bowl. The play wasn't quite as lovely as the uniforms tonight, but a win over the bRuins is always delightful, and doubly so when it knocks them out of bowl-eligibility! #FightOn #USC

3 unsportsmanlike conduct penalties on fucla after the first half ended? Stay classy bRuins! I don't think I had ever seen a kickoff from the 5 yard line before tonight. #fighton #USC

While I always wish The Muppet Show still was in production, sometimes I feel that even more than normal. Like now. Imagine how wonderful it would be if special guest star Cynthia Erivo was in full Elphaba attire and did a duet of "Bein' Green" with Kermit.

My visit with Mom is done, and I'm at Harrisburg airport waiting to head home. It's the best airport visit ever, as I got some wonderful airport dog therapy when I met Gracie, the King Charles Spaniel, who is silky and seems to live for attention and petting.

Lovely day today wandering my old stomping grounds with mom. We spent a couple of hours walking around Ship U, & then went to Herwin Village to see the old house. We even stopped in and chatted with dad's old departmental secretary who lives there. Lots of great formative memories from those places.
