Fantastic ending to Baroness Kidron's speech in the House of Lords yesterday, which led to the government's defeat on AI & copyright. Speaking the UK's creators: "Their property, their labour, is worthy of your protection - because apart from anything else, it is not ours to give away."

The Bionic Woman, Futureworld, and Doctor Who's cyborgs and androids frightened the pants off me, specifically 'The Big Reveal': the scene where the robot's faceplate would fall off, revealing circuitry, wires, flashing lights, and googly eyeballs. Talk about uncanny valley.

This is what I just sent to York Pride.

they had wanted to be buried this way, but not so soon or with the changes to their particulate matter - the fifth expedition

Post a photo of a bus from your camera roll

and then there’s this small moment, where archeology nudges up against the music of Max Eastley’s Aeolian Harp, and a Nigel Kneale notion of sound as a thread through time. Wonderous.

hey. 100K signatures and they'll have to debate this in parliament. let's fucking go petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70...

Old message from my friend Simon: “Promised you a list of names of poisonous British mushrooms. I realise now that it reads like a list of rejected Cocteau Twins song titles.”

Jean Marsh has died at the age of 90. Brian Shuel's 1961 photograph of the actor hangs in London's National Portrait Gallery and is one of the most striking images in the collection

One of the all-time great Doctor Who behind the scenes pics. I love how Jean's holding Bill's hand here.

When people calculate how long it takes to make something artistic, they need to factor in how hard it is if nobody has asked for it, there is no deadline, and no payment. Because at the moment of great self doubt, in the middle of every project, that’s when those three things will stop you dead.

Absolutely loved The Hot Spot, which is basically a cosy Twin Peaks set in the shadow of Mount Fuji. Mikako Ichikawa and her gang of old school friends have impeccable comic timing. I’m feeling a bit bereft that it’s over… commission a 2nd series Nippon TV! #thehotspot

This. Those with power do not want others to have human rights - the rights you have because you are human. That is why they sneer at human rights, use the media and propaganda to deride those rights, and cut off legal aid so the rights cannot be asserted. And some unwise people clap and cheer.

Right. Transphobic asshats have got a petition to repeal the GRA to over 10,000 signatures. Fuck that. Let's get this one higher: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70...

This is just such a beautifully written summary of why AI doesn’t “learn” or “think”. Still livid about the government’s naive and credulous boosterism around AI and their complete misunderstanding of what it means for copyright and the creative industries.

Jack Kirby, forty-nine years ago:

If you work in the creative industries, please give feedback on this government public consultation on AI and our copyright. ALCS provides help here with answering the questions, and you don’t have to answer every question to submit it. The consultation ends SOON, Feb 25th:
