📉 Neil sums up the lunacy of the self-inflicted hit to the UK's GDP after Brexit...

Incredibly touched to be mentioned here with such empathy by Kate Blincoe - Country diary: My fear is that one year the swifts will not return | Birds | The Guardian Country diary: My fear is that one year the swifts will not return www.theguardian.com/environment/...

I see Honest Bob Jenrick has a new little video attacking barristers for representing unpopular clients. Once again for those at the back: Lawyers are not their clients. Which is how, when Jenrick broke the law in government, he had lawyers to defend him.

Let me be clearer. I was former head of UK Foreign Office humanitarian affairs, incl policy on war crimes, genocide. I helped craft policy for international criminal court. I’m in no doubt these are war crimes. Disproportionate, indiscriminate, collective punishment by an occupying power.

This morning, something a little different (have you noticed that I'm diversifying?). I wrote this for a jewellery website last year and they opted not to use it, so here it is, about diamonds, and Saturn, and exoplanets. unexpecteddelirium.substack.com/p/its-rainin...

Who wouldn't trust someone who doesn't like fact checking?

There are many common threads in this article about Britain that pertain to the path of the US. Great read!!! Please share.

“The Overton window has shifted. Sir Keir is telling Labour’s own story at last: he is on the front foot, and he has declined to make any concessions in the argument with Brexiters. So it is left to them to rage impotently from the sidelines” 👏 eastangliabylines.co.uk/pecksniff/pe...

All the people complaining that the police have said the Liverpool driver was white British are the same people who made it necessary for the police to say he was white British.

This is what it's like to live in a racist society. If the perpetrator is white, they're just some lone madman whose actions have no political implication. If they're an immigrant - in particular a dark-skinned Muslim immigrant - they represent their group and are part of a political attack.

An important thread. Am highlighting the conclusion, but it's worth clicking through and scrolling back up. FPTP used to keep one of two parties in charge. Now it has turned the next GE into the biggest mess ever. With 5 parties in the mix, even a ludicrously low vote share can deliver a majority.

This is one of the toughest articles we have published to date “The whole world left us alone to die” – one family clings to life in Gaza As Benjamin Netanyahu says that Israel will ‘take control’ of all Gaza, we look at what his military campaign has done to ordinary people

The number of people from the USA applying for UK citizenship is growing rapidly. So, how are we going to treat those fleeing Trump's fascism? In the way we did the Jews in the 30s, which was abysmally? Or are we going to welcome them, as we should? www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2025/05...

That was the reset that was. New post on my Brexit & Beyond Blog evaluating the framing and content of the UK-EU reset Summit, political reactions to it, and what it says about Labour's post-Brexit approach to the EU: chrisgreybrexitblog.blogspot.com/2025/05/that...

Foreign Secretary David Lammy suspends UK-Israel trade negotiations and summons the Israeli ambassador over IDF actions in Gaza, which he says are "incompatible with the principles that underpin our bilateral relations" and an "affront to the values of the British people."

Social media this morning is a zombie apocalypse of dinosaur Tory politicians and right wing hangers-on hankering after the nasty Brexit wars of the last decade. Our country has moved on!

If Labour won’t defend the principle of immigration, it’ll keep losing the argument, and voters. Yvette Cooper’s interview with Kuenssberg showed just how far the party's shifted. Read how Labour is retreating on immigration without a plan. @eastangliabylines.co.uk @bearlypolitics.co.uk

For 66 days the Netanyahu government has blocked ALL food and aid from going into Gaza. Now we're told it plans to seize and reoccupy huge parts of Gaza, as it pushes for Trump's plan to force 2 million Palestinians to leave. That would be ethnic cleansing by another name. We can’t stand for it.

"As Labour last year won a shocking 63% of seats on 34% of votes, so could Farage win a majority on puny votes", writes @pollytoynbee "Electoral reform is now in every party’s interest, and above all, in voters'" 💯

Casting my eye down south, just checking how the smug "oh you silly naïve little fools, we simply can't use a proportional voting system, it'd let the far right in!" stuff has held up this time Very well I see, certainly worthwhile denying your fellow citizens a fair and democratic system for this!

The new Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough won 28% of the vote, on 33% turnout. There was no option to pick a second preference. Like in the West of England, the winning candidate was elected by less than 10% of the electorate. This is not sustainable. FPTP must go.

Could the UK-EU Summit reset post-Brexit politics? New post on my Brexit & Beyond Blog. If framed as a major strategic announcement, the Summit could challenge the Farage insurgency far more effectively than Labour's 'make Brexit boring' approach: chrisgreybrexitblog.blogspot.com/2025/05/coul...
