Even though voting provincially in Guelph might be a bit anticlimactic - I can't see @mikeschreiner.bsky.social losing this one (and that's a-ok with me). It's still important to cast your ballot. It would be nice to not have a low turnout election for once.

A list of things that could have done a better job than Doug Ford on the housing file: a blindfolded monkey with one arm tied behind its back; a damp cardboard box filled with marbles; a stiff westerly breeze.

Just the hit of nostalgia I needed... also any list that has k-os, Bedouin Soundclash, and Stan Rogers on it is a-ok in my books www.cbc.ca/music/songs-...

I talk about this a lot with my consulting hat on. The financial pressures on libraries to cover the costs of the ever-increasing article output, and the drivers of research misconduct, are driven in large part by the way we incentivise and measure researchers (1)

If you’re in the South end of Guelph today advance voting seems to be the place to be…. It might wind being a low voter turnout but the folks around here are doing their part

The thing about this video with Trudeau & Miller is that you know that no such video of Poilievre exists, or ever can exist. I'm a f*cking Indian, I have serious issues with this country, but I'll never hate it as much as PP does. This is home, and I can't hate someone who sees it the same way.

That is a cheap-ass looking trophy…

If I were Slavin I’d feel pretty slighted not being named 3rd star tonight… buddy was an absolute game saver for the Americans…

I’m a little concerned about the ratio of hockey to betting ads tonight… seems a little heavy on the thing I want to see compared to a normal nhl game

For @thelocal.to I wrote about Doug Ford's record on colleges and universities. Ontario has the lowest funding in the country. Without immediate investment, we are compromising a generation of students, including skilled workers needed to build key housing, transit, infrastructure projects. #onpoli

Like everyone else - I have some thoughts on the Clarivate announcement: tinyurl.com/35jxfnwc Not just a change in the model, but a representation of a larger shift in the landscape, and the dangers of monopolies and market consolidation - threatening the core mission of libraries globally.

I know this is crazy talk but instead of “solving the affordability crisis” what if our political class focused on adequately funding healthcare, education, and infrastructure and maybe even forced municipalities to build more housing www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

I can see a logic to it... It's likely that content providers will be under some pressure to suppress certain kinds of information. If you control the content of the bundle it makes compliance easy... In theory, they protect their revenue while staying out of the eye of the fascists...

More like this... except maybe we could just approve them w/o involvement of the land tribunal.

Ppl are talking about "picking up" scholars leaving the US bc of cutbacks, but that's not the right way to think about talent flows. Few USians will leave US; rather US will cease to be the unrivalled academic destination point. The play is for intl scholars who otherwise would have gone to US.

Could we do a tunnel from Kingsville to Pelee Island instead? It would accomplish about as much...

no he's got a point. wouldn't it be cool if the company that laid me off on maternity leave also had the power to evict me

Today in the @scholarlykitchen.bsky.social I consider the notion of Scholarly Publishing based on a zero-trust architecture and its implications scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2025/02/05/s...

From the new CBRE Tech Talent report: for similar levels of tech talent, companies in Baltimore pay twice what they do in Toronto. I really would love to hear an explanation from CCI about why Canadian tech pay is so awful.

It would really help manage expectations and increase awareness of opportunities if we reframed these discussions as "40% of postdocs, well-trained and experienced, choose to work in the many alternative occupations and industries outside universities".

"Early-career researchers are particularly at risk, “as it can mean missing research milestones and jeopardize hiring, promotion and tenure decisions”, she adds." -> Anyone else find it crazy and also not implausible that folks could be denied tenure if the NIH and its funding were just ended...
