The latter argument, "power reveals", has also famously been made by Robert Caro in his biography of Lyndon B. Johnson. I'd argue that this is as true for power at a "small" scale as it is for world leaders.

I feel that in industry, everyone knows what everyone else is doing: companies hire from each other all the time. And even if employees follow NDAs, they still bring their experience with them when transferring. When Waymo started working on AV, there was barely anyone to hire from.

Waymo is special because it suffers from a first-mover disadvantage like no other AV company. Because there was barely anyone to copy, they had to learn most lessons themselves. If Waymo can demonstrate profitability on the operational side alone, it will already be a huge achievement.

Umangi proposes an approach for segmentation in scenes created with 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS). Ziyi's work in image diffusion models proposes to use a set of per-object representations to control the 3D pose of individual objects in a scene. It was done during an internship with Thomas Kipf's amazing team at DeepMind 2/๐Ÿงต East Exhibit Hall A-C 1507 Project: neural-assets.github.io

More recently, CVPR also started having robotics papers. Plus some multi-modal work. I'd be curious to see the numbers for pure vision papers. They may actually be stagnating.
