In Nov 2024 on BlueSky I happened upon the Google PM in charge of walking paths for Google maps, @rio.akasaka.org. He was happily announcing that they added stairs to the paths, so people can avoid them if they need to. This is a step in the right direction. More please! Based on more qual research

K: Locally Owned: The route to commercial destinations owned locally. Options for recently opened, civic engagement, etc.
(These are made up. Actual patterns would come from qual research.)

I: In Their Steps: A route that follows a historic people's march that helped bring about more equity. A route that links historic spots.
J: Check It Out: The route to non-commercial destinations (park, museum, etc.). Option for those you/group haven't visted yet.

G: Loop It Together: A loop instead of point-to-point, or an open loop. With options for hills, errands, visits to friends, parks, daylight, etc.
H: Starry Night: If at night, a route with (or without!) streetlights. If full moon, maximize chance for view.

E: Hear This: A route that has less traffic and industrial noise, and potentially some human and natural sounds. For walking or running to a destination. Fine if it's longer.
F: Breathe This: A route that maximizes trees, plants, birds, etc. (clean air route?)

C: Safe From Drivers: A walking or riding route for kids going to school or play. A route which is is safe from distracted people in a hurry.
D: Thrive by Bike: The least (or most) hilly bike route. With bike lanes, paths, dirt roads, single track. With (or avoiding) other cyclists/groups.

New solutions that support a broader variety of people depend upon curiosity and taking time with people.
Ignorance & bias result from moving fast and shallow, without even realizing what the assumptions are. Those solutions "lack substance" indeed.

2/4 Has any org counted how much time we lose? How much emotion it causes? How many minutes or hours we spend trying to make the new version work, just be able to do the thing we intended to do with it? (#Instagram! 😠 We design for squares, and they change to rectangles.)

6/7 We stop making assumptions. We start building solutions that are truly distinct and valuable to people.
👉 It should be easy to recall a conversation you heard/read where demographics or roles stood in for people's cognition. Let's build awareness of this.

5/7 The assumptions tied to a demographic "insight" are wrong for roughly half the people.
If we work at a smaller scale, subsets of your whole customer base divided by what their goal is, then we can see patterns in people's cognition.

4/7 Demographics have been used historically at a population-level scale. Demographics focus on the median "behavior" of people in that demographic population, based on big data, surveys, or observation without understanding cognition.

3/7 And in product design & strategy, it causes our teams to create solutions that harm people. It causes us to be unaware of opportunities for innovation and growth. It causes people to distrust our brand.

2/7 Society uses demographics and roles as shorthand to signify differences between how big groups of people think. We see demographic and role-based assumptions about populations in academics, in journalism, in economics, etc.. It's everywhere. We don't question it. We don't even notice it. ⚠️

Thanks! I was not in charge of either. The cover lol! 1st version was a brick wall w/glasses in front. 2nd version was like this cover, only the ocean was freezing blue, sky covered in storm clouds, and the person looked dejected and about to drown themself. I gave feedback & Heads of State fixed it

3/4 The key is to avoid representing individual concepts as "insights." Only patterns can support "insights." The pattern itself is not an insight. An insight is how that pattern compares to what your org is doing and what opportunities it wants to explore.

2/4 To get patterns to appear, you need to set up a study using something that is contant across participants. In many cases, the constant we set is the person's goal (or intention or purpose)--something they want to address.
