Ovalle, are you kidding me

Hulu just dropped the broadcast. Hilarious.

Appropriately, Adrien Brody’s speech had a musical intermission.

A good reminder that I need to show the kids THE WIZ. (They’ve heard the music.)

We could’ve had Uma, Oprah. Oprah, Uma.

If you found THE SUBSTANCE to be a feminist masterpiece, then you’d love I’M NOT A ROBOT.

Conan’s the reason I turned it on and the reason I’m still watching.

watching the oscars. . .

Like Denzel winning for THE HURRICANE rather than MALCOLM X, this Oscar really goes to Zoe Saldaña for DRUMLINE.

I was mixed on ANORA, but I was enthralled by the editing. So buoyant and surprising and informative.

The costuming was (by far) the best part of WICKED.

Conan, et al, if you're interested in Estonian film, this site is a great resource and has lots of their catalog for free. I'd start with the very fun Jüri Rumm (1929).

I watched all but one of the Best Picture nominees (***) for the 2025 Oscars. Here's where I'd put them, relative to other things I liked this year.

CONCLAVE does smell great.

when I check on the onions in the cast iron pan

I've seen all but one of the Best Picture nominees, and I promise this is neither a Complaint nor a Take but they are a pretty bleak bunch. I hasten to add: art about misery, narratives without happy endings, etc., are no less great, and in fact they tend to give me hope (not that they need to).

japan is just fun as hell to watch. that’s it, that’s my analysis. sometimes it ain’t all about us, that team has a special collection of talent that can play in a way very few teams can. it’s beautiful.

I love watching COLWNT play. Maybe someday they'll have institutional support and a decent defense, but right now they play really fun football.

November 18, 2024.

This is my footballingly exclusive concern as well. Albert’s first look is always backwards. I guess that tracks, though. #USWNT

Shaw was the best USWNT player in the first half. Australia is double- and triple-teaming her to take her out in this second half.

Let’s see if Albert can complete a forward pass today. Not sure she’s targeted anyone besides the backs. #USWNT

Odd to see G Thompson on the right. Probably to pair with A Thompson, but it puts Emma Sears on the left. Surprising. But obviously working so far. #USWNT

The NYT's attempt to expand from a Cooking and Games app network into a news source is not going well. (Imagine watching this and thinking it was the governor doing the threatening.)

Absolutely wild finish. Woso fans should catch up with one.

“Not everything is decaying faster than we can love it.” Lauren Groff, “Ghosts and Empties”

ESPWNT cleared poorly and a beautiful one-time strike by Belgium puts them up 1-0. Spain can absolutely come back from this, but when they lose it often looks like this.

Yohannes is making Coffey better. Coffey gets to play to her strengths with Y as a deep-sitting playmaker. And Y is so slippery, releasing the ball before she can get grabbed, which means everything is happening faster. Fun to watch. #USWNT

Yasmeen Ryan couldn’t find the game early, but she’s come alive. First the assist. Then the key block on D in the box. Now winning the ball, quick pass to McKeown, beautiful pass to the pocket for Sentnor, who has been making things happen all game. Lovely. #USWNT

Yohannes. Yohannes. Yohannes. #uswnt

With Macario, Sentnor, and Yohannes, there are good ideas quickly executed. There is a freshness to the strategic options for the USWNT that we haven’t seen. It’s even making Nighswonger and Fox look better in the middle third.

for my own amusement* here's the year each of the USWNT starting XI were born: 1993 Emily Sonnett 1994 Lindsey Heaps 1995 Jane Campbell 1998 Emily Fox 1998 Sam Coffey 1999 Catarina Macario 1999 Yazmeen Ryan 1999 Tara McKeown 2000 Jenna Nighswonger 2004 Ally Sentnor 2007 Lily Yohannes *death pangs

JPNWNT is so good, and it feels like they’re nowhere near their ceiling. They’ve gotta be a top three contender for next WWC.

Hey, philosophers: Has anyone written about Huey Newton, not as a political philosopher but his engagement with philosophers like Plato, Descartes, Ryle, etc., on metaphysics, phil mind, phil history, etc.? #philsky

It looks like King Vidor's THE CROWD is on WatchTCM in the US. It's possibly the best movie about America ever made. Highly recommend to all.

One of my many old fogey opinions: In informal prose, don't extend a letter that can't be extended vocally. If you neeeeeeeeed to know why, try this in your lifeeeeeeeee.

12yo: “Do you ever feel like you’ve not accomplished anything important in your life?” me, panicking: “uh…” 12yo: “Because I feel like that sometimes.” me, relieved because I get to play helpful parent rather than honest parent: “Oh, buddy…”

The first of my friends has moved out of the country (semi-indefinitely).
