One thing about this galling op-ed from Bessent, he lays out this ‘deal’ as if the war in Ukraine is done, it’s freedom already guaranteed. It’s not and Zelenskyy’s one aim is to secure it. “That demonstrates our long-term commitment to a free and secure Ukraine” This does nothing of the sort.

Happy Sunday.

Let's be clear: the idea that breakfast clubs would adequately mitigate the impact of the two-child limit is absolute bollocks. The average household hit by the two-child limit loses out on roughly £3,800 a year. They're not currently spending that on coco pops.

The government’s approach of “AI at all costs” continues to stagger me. I’ll admit I’m overly sceptical of AIs future positive impact, but it’s bonkers how those who do overstate it in govt are so willing to nuke creative industries, services industry, potential closer EU ties etc for magic beans.

Using "max out the credit card" is an absolute giveaway that an author should steer clear of fiscal prognosticating, but discussing the rise in debt from 30 to 100% of GDP *without mentioning the financial crisis" is absolutely ****ing spectacular work www.thetimes.com/comment/colu...

Can't help thinking about this scene from The Death of Stalin. This is going to be the US in another year. youtu.be/bP892a6Ltv8?...

I’m drinking Ardbeg and we’re watching Conclave.

Just the two nazi salutes at CPAC thus far. Incase anyone was keeping count…

The imminent death of a pope does seem to fit into the timeline of things generally going to pot.

I didn’t need any reason to love these two people more, but here it is…

For all the god awful sanewashing going around, there are some fabulously informative (and terrifying) pieces being written right now.

Nixon’s Saturday Night Massacre looks rather quaint these days.

All I keep thinking and hoping in the midst of extraordinary noise, is that Starmer, Macron, von der Leyen, Merz et al are all seeing the world as is and adjusting to that strategic reality. We are moving to a post-post-WWII world where liberal democracies must hold ground outside of Atlanticism.

This, btw, is basically the key to current British politics. Understand it, you win; ignore it, you lose.

think what grates most about Fraser Nelson's "a dramatic shift? of MY Overton window?" shtick is that those of us who kept talking about the Spectator's dangerous slide to the right were treated as hysterical, not able to see the humour in shock jocks, etc etc, when we were just clearly right!

So much for the whole 'he won't dare touch the military, they're a check' analysis.

A straight up purge of the US military’s top black and women brass.

Looking at you, people who say “the NHS needs less administrators and managers”

little bit of inside baseball about my old employer, but if it's true the new statesman is considering duncan robinson as editor that would be a great pick

Fair play to Alan Shearer here.
