The year’s last author copies are here, on the first day of my holiday break. @dollyjorgensen.bsky.social and I wrote an epilogue for this excellent book on Digital Ecologies. #envhum

Australia's government still gives itself little ribbon rosettes and medallions for being the best fossil fuel exporter www.industry.gov.au/publications...

While there remains uncertainty about the timing and sequence of catastrophic earth system tipping points, they are very real.

If I could take the liberty of quoting, @guyjackson.bsky.social, "India's submission [in the ongoing ICJ case] read from the playbook [we] identify in this article" for @instituteplanet.bsky.social some time back. We ought to hold global south elites accountable for their hypocrisy! #ClimateJustice

Brilliant

Invest in public transport. Invest in public investment-radical idea?

Worth a thought. Hope is not a strategy.

‘I lost my six year old son when flash floods inundated Nova Scotia’ This is Tera’s story, from Canada #climatebreakdown #COP29 1/13 www.theguardian.com/environment/...

English translation: Greta Thunberg warns #COP29 is "about to agree to a death sentence" "The COP processes are not only failing, they are part of a system built on injustice, designed to sacrifice current and future generations so that a select few can continue to reap unimaginable profits."

Just to emphasize: Saudi Arabia *and only Saudi Arabia* was sent a draft of the COP29 negotiating documents *by the COP presidency* so that Saudi Arabia alone *could edit it directly*.

As always a brilliant summary of nearly everything that’s wrong and some great ideas for reform.

I'm grateful to my publisher, Oxford UP, for featuring me on their blog this week, where I got to talk about my book THE LANGUAGE OF CLIMATE POLITICS and my backstory — *and* my need not to chase "hope"! 😆 blog.oup.com/2024/11/unde...

"An AMOC collapse would be a massive, planetary-scale disaster." "This is not about being 100% sure that the AMOC will pass its tipping point this century; it is that we’d like to be 100% sure that it won’t." By @rahmstorf.bsky.social www.realclimate.org/index.php/ar...

Our principal was interviewed for this thoughtful article. Are there alternatives to the Paris Agreement on Climate Delay?

It won't be just the LA Times and Washington Post. It will be your employer, your university, your school district, and your local elected officials. They will all cave and engage in anticipatory obedience to fascism because of their cowardice and greed. Your institutions will not save you.

In 2022, the 'current policies' projection of warming was 2.6C. In 2024, it's 2.9C. This is what I mean when I urge caution and over-excitement about stuff like huge solar capacity growth. *This* is the number that matters - and it's getting ****worse**** www.carbonbrief.org/unep-new-cli...

Measurements show that record-high #methane growth in 2020–2022 was mainly driven by increased #emissions from microbial sources such as #wetlands, waste & #livestock. Methane (#CH4) is a prominent target for #climatechange mitigation: doi.org/10.1073/pnas... #globalwarming

New UNEP emissions gap report highlights a "massive gap between rhetoric and reality" and calls for a "quantum leap" in ambition to deliver Paris goals, as the world is way off-track today. I cover the details over at @CarbonBrief: www.carbonbrief.org/...

1. Still saying it's OK for kids to go to school with covid 2. Not rolling out the boosters to most of the population 3. no obligation for employers to pay any attention to this "recommendation" 4. You have to pay for tests so ?????

How to make a failed state into something even worse

Half the climate movement struggles with this figure. It means nothing good about our planetary trajectory.

🚨If successful, this could be a significant move by the UK. It hands the Secretary of State the duty of achieving GHG reductions consistent with Paris targets AND makes them responsible for ensuring that "by 2030 ... nature is visibly and measurably on the path of recovery [vs 2020]".

Yes.

Critique can be hope especially when it’s challenging our systems of delay. New paths to change appear other than those rigged to fail.

I always suspected this could be the case, and new research proves it's true: Rich countries could raise 5x the money poor countries need for climate finance thru windfall taxes on fossil fuels, ending harmful subsidies + a wealth tax on billionaires. Read more: www.oilchange.org/publications...

We have a cover finally! My translation of Teresa Präauer's Tier werden will be out later this year with Seagull Books: www.seagullbooks.org/becoming-ani... A perfect stocking stuffer for that special someone.

The copy edit is back with the press and now that anxious wait for proofs and cover art. Seven years in the making.

We need to be screaming about the energy usage of AI engines from our whole heart. Testing it out, making weird art “just to see”, heck even using “AI search engine results” are a MASSIVE energy drain.

A mining company (with ties to military) has cordoned off the majority of a community forest in Cambodia in a land grab. @geraldrflynn.bsky.social investigated with Nehru Pry. 'It's public forests being turned into private fortunes' My latest on the Mongabay Newscast from @mongabay.bsky.social

Such a huge amount of public cash has flowed into CCS, with very very little to show for it. Norway is the 2nd worst offender, when it comes to public cash going towards fossil industry greenwashing in the form of this fake solution: www.oilchange.org/publications...

I’m not sure letting Russia commit ecocide in #Ukraine with impunity is the right way to tackle the #climatecrisis but you do you Guardian
