Conservative “new masculinity” is just crybullyism, talk big shit then whine when people push back in kind bsky.app/profile/atru...

Punishing pro-Palestinian speech in the United States has always been the most consistent, longstanding "cancel culture" in the United States and the Trump White House is just making that fundamental reality all the more clear www.washingtonpost.com/education/20...

‪Not only has Israel restricted the flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza, but a Netanyahu spokesperson also said Israel is “not ruling out the possibility of cutting off water & electricity in Gaza.” Now Israel is doing just that. By @ishaantharoor.bsky.social www.washingtonpost.com/world/2025/0...

Of course @ishaantharoor.bsky.social is right—Trump’s approach to Canada copies Putin’s view of Ukraine. www.washingtonpost.com/world/2025/0...

“The Tariff Act of 1890 — linked to William McKinley, the staunchly protectionist future Republican president who helped author it — was conceived by U.S. politicians in part as a measure to bully Canada into the U.S. fold.”

The left accelerationist case for Trump paints him as a vile vessel who will, nevertheless, achieve important goals: (1) make the US less militaristic & (2) empower the Global South. It makes intuitive sense bc Trump is weakening USG & Western alliances. But it’s deeply naive. Here's why: 🧵

Judging from social media, the online right is reacting to the Trump/Zelensky debacle precisely how the White House would want. In their view, the U.S. has done more than enough, Kyiv should obey whatever Trump says, and, if not, it’s Europe’s problem. The schism is here.

The rush (and the need) to get all these names/have everyone on the record? Methods tried and tested by Stalin and the Mafia: Make everyone complicit.

Perfectly executed piece from my colleague @danamilbank.bsky.social, on our owner's edict that WaPo opinions write "every day in support and defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets." The greatest threat to these pillars is Donald Trump. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...

I'm stepping on the theme of Chris' book here but, we have an extremely toxic information environment controlled by wealthy oligarchs who have aligned themselves with Trump, the whole point is to manipulate people into making poor decisions. bsky.app/profile/chri...

A lot of people on this here non-hellsite are making this bad argument. I understand the perception. But there is no interference in the newsroom -- and when there is, we'll be the first to tell you about it. And yes, the Post has covered what happened today: www.washingtonpost.com/style/media/...

Just a reminder that the opinion section is walled-off from the newsroom and is home to about a tenth of Post journalists. I have had so many conversations with folks who canceled their subs, urging them to reconsider and stressing that ownership doesn't interfere in newsroom. That's still true.

Trump’s “attempts to strong-arm neighbors in Mexico and Canada, to threaten the annexation of the Panama Canal and call for the absorption of Greenland were all gestures of an imperial potentate grasping for his sphere of influence” - @ishaantharoor.bsky.social www.washingtonpost.com//world/2025/...

“Trump’s foreign policy treats the nations of the world less as sovereign, independent nations than as sites of arbitrage, evasion, and extraction. Call it ‘national globalism’: the pursuit of extraterritorial space to advance American interests.” via @ishaantharoor.bsky.social

DOGE quietly deleted the 5 biggest spending cuts it celebrated last week www.nytimes.com/2025/02/25/u...

A federal judge on Tuesday ordered the Trump administration to pay hundreds of millions in foreign assistance funds that have been in limbo despite his directive that such aid resume — action targeting President Trump’s pause in aid, which has led to chaos globally.

This is grim for us in the legacy media. But there's a silver lining: Maybe it forces a reckoning within the Beltway about the value of a certain kind of access. What's the value of being in the briefing room in these kind of conditions?

To me, a Nazi salute means, "I want to murder your family." There can be no irony about it: It puts deep anger and hatred in my heart to see it done and I will never forgive anyone who justifies or minimizes it.

As I wrote this Jan. 6, Brazil and the United States took two divergent paths. In the former, accountability and civic responsibility prevailed. In the latter, well, we are seeing what's happening now www.washingtonpost.com/world/2025/0...

I would take 1000 years of crypto-racist, mid-20th century northeast WASP Republican noblesse oblige over another five weeks of these insufferable tech oligarchs spouting off their nails-on-chalkboard hot takes on everything under the sun.

In Gaza, over 1,000 miles of water and sanitation networks destroyed. The scale of destruction is total, and wholly at odds with repeated Israeli military insistence over the course of the war that strikes were carefully targeted and proportionate. Per @oxfaminternational.bsky.social

The idea of renaming "Greenland" to "Red, White and Blueland" must have come from our 2020 Science paper where we (Ben Smith and 14 others) used NASA's ICESat and ICESat-2 laser altimetry to show how much the ice sheet surface went up or down in 16 years.
