Trump doesn't even need to invade Panama or Greenland. He just needs to allow Russia to invade and then force Panama and Denmark to accept mineral deals in exchange for Russia ending the killing.

US appears set on crushing Ukraine capacity to force Zelensky to submit. Never mind that this is a bonfire of leverage versus Russia, which has every reason to believe it can dictate terms or reject a ceasefire in the knowledge that Trump is likely to blame Ukraine. Criminally bad negotiating.

If the EU could seize this moment, and issue eurobonds, “it would tap in to a deep well of willing buyers keen to trim US exposure” www.ft.com/content/4ba5...

Exactly. By far the fastest way to end the war would have been to increase the support for Ukraine so Russia would stop attacking.

Just to be clear and so there can be no more denial. 1) The USA is now the enemy of Ukrainian Freedom 2) The USA is now the enemy of European Freedom 3) Anyone who supports Trump supports this 4) Europe alone will have to support Ukraine

Don’t ask Ukraine to stop defending. Ask Russia to stop attacking.

Those who argue that this is just a short term pause, ie leverage that Trump is using to get Ukraine to the table... are missing the bigger picture... of the immeasurable damage that has been done to our world standing. That we would even do this to an ally fighting for survival-is THE story.

Great thread. I usually operate with a few more reasons for Russia's invasion including such aspects as regime security and a desire to undermine NATO, but I definitely agree that these are the two most important ones. And neither of them is understood by the current U.S. administration.

There are two reasons why Putin invaded Ukraine. The first is that he believed he could. In 2014, Ukraine was weak, embroiled in revolution. He tested this by annexing Crimea—and succeeded. He tried again in eastern Ukraine; it didn’t go as well, but he bided his time. 1/12

Says the man who just admitted the Tate bros to the U.S.

We had Russia on the ropes. They were crippled by sanctions. They had made minimal headway into Ukraine. Putin had to survive a military uprising within his own ranks. He was down to pleading for conscripts from North Korea. Then he played his ace in the hole. Donald Motherfucking Trump.

See, the thing is, Zelensky refused to tug his forelock to Trump. Or to grovel.

Watching American Republican congressmen attack NATO alongside tech oligarchs only reinforces my belief that the U.S. won’t last four years without some form of disruptive event: unrest, secessionism, or other catastrophic events. It’s like watching the USSR’s decline speedrun.

Trump and Vance wanted Zelensky to thank them for an aid package that Vance voted against and Trump opposed.

Kinzinger: There’s a reason that every Trump cabinet member has had to tweet how strong he was today. Because they got the memo from The White House that they better come out and support Trump because this is a really bad day for them and they know it

The foreign policy of a nation often reflects its leader. Our foreign policy is now churlish, acquisitive, brutish, impulsive, reckless, callous, boorish, expansionist, shallow, ignorant, exploitive, nasty, dishonest, manipulative, corrupt and unethical. A reflection of our president.

That Oval Office debacle today solidified two things: 1. The US is not a trusted ally 2. Zelensky is a hero

🚨The European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas : “The free world needs a new leader” The United States is weaker and more isolated than ever.

I have covered presidential politics for 40 years. This was the most juvenile display by a President and Vice President I have ever seen. Other presidents treated their enemies with more respect. This is a low point and a dark day for the US. Totally embarrassing.

Poroshenko supported Zelensky… WOW 😮

Today is a reminder of Zelensky's superhuman stamina and strength. He deflected deeply unfair vile attacks in his 3rd language and kept it together while two bullies threatened his country's existence and repeated the tired but infuriating propaganda tropes of the aggressor.

President Trump likely sees little value in leveraging pressure against Putin and instead views forcing Ukraine into capitulation as the easiest path to achieve his goals. He shifts blame on Zelensky, portraying him as the obstacle to peace, to excuse his own failure to deliver on election promises

Considering that Trump was already opposed to any new aid package for Ukraine and made it clear that the US wont be involved in enforcing peace when the war in Ukraine ends, I dont think Trump has anywhere nearly as much leverage as he thinks.

Just so we are clear - the reason why JD Vance has constantly refused to go to Ukraine is because he is a coward. He would NEVER go there and meet with their soldiers or talk with their leaders. Because their courage and integrity would show him for what he is - a sniveling jerk.

It would be far less time-consuming to just document when he tells the truth. shorturl.at/tohgb

Donald is proving men can multitask. He's simultaneously being spokesman for Kremlin AND president Musk.

🇺🇦❗️🇺🇸 "NO recognition of the occupied territories. NO ultimatums from Russia. Security guarantees for Ukraine!" 🗣️ Podolyak clearly stated that Ukraine will outline to Kellogg its “red lines” that should never be crossed during negotiations.

Hi All--a double barrelled post I hope you will find very important (and all free). First a comment on what we saw from Trump last night. The USA is now an open enemy of democracy--and needs to be understood as such. Also, Paul Krugman and I have a video chat. open.substack.com/pub/phillips...

I don't know how the war in Ukraine ends but I know how the United States ends

Two tyrants called each other One wanted to take Kyiv in 3 days, and the second wanted peace in 24 hours #Trump
