yeah, it's called Facebook tapping into the darkest qualities of the human condition

ALERT: Seattle finally starting to be an actual city

"Dana Christiansen... is on the board of the Washington Childcare Centers Association, and she found this property that seemed suitable. She made an offer and purchased this property. They could only find room for 29 parking spaces... she needed 32 parking spaces. They walked away from the site."

Today on Volts: parking is the "dark matter" of land use, invisibly making everything worse, but most municipalities continue to mandate minimum levels of it. WA state just passed some awesome parking reform & I dig into it with @citizen-cate.bsky.social & Alan Durning of @sightline.org.

Congratulations to Bremerton! Opposition to parking reform is a mile wide but an inch deep.

Most Americans frequently use federal science information. But few are concerned that cuts to federal science spending could affect their access to such information, a new poll finds.

Don't really have the disposable income to afford a Model X anyways, but sure, happy to help

Kind, decent, and compassionate, Pope Francis was badly out of step with contemporary western culture.

The Bellevue City Council just unanimously voted to appoint Vishal Bhargava to fill a council vacancy that will open up when John Stokes resigns in early May. Bhargava is currently a member of the Bellevue Planning Commission and a Director of Product Manager at Amazon.

Anyone who thinks this isn't market manipulation is totally lost. Anyone who thinks this isn't criminal activity is totally lost. This is what happens when your relationship with your government is a toxic, narcissistic one.

Friendly reminder that states can lead on transportation issues without federal dollars. It's just a matter of priorities. Case and point: Colorado. The Bustang system has been enormously successful. Last year the state passed bills that raise $170 million annually for buses, trains, and transit.

Kudos to Colorado. I hope other states are taking notes. www.cpr.org/2025/04/01/c...

It's actually crazy to think that our entire government apparatus - staffing, social security, military decision making - was running decently well just 3 months ago. THREE MONTHS.

The director of the Parks Department clarified that during burn bans, Cybertruck fires are only permitted within a contained site.

Parkitecture is imperialist, actually

Inbox: Lime gives 1 million rides in Seattle so far this year.

Sometimes I genuinely wonder if MAGA types generally felt the way that many of us feel now during the Biden era.

I’ve been embarrassed to be an American before, but only mostly in the innocuous ways we built our cities. This is different. I’ve never felt ashamed to be American like this.

Hello

This is a very positive step forward to build more affordable housing in WA State.

Exactly

It’s my GOD GIVEN RIGHT to be stuck in traffic FOR FREE 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🚙🚙🚙💨💨💨

Harrell is supported by city attorney Davison, who claims that sleeping in peaceful wilderness is actually a public safety hazard. “Needles have been found near campsites, and even though they were just larches, we aren’t taking any chances,” said Harrell during his press conference on Prusik Peak.

Just cancelled my Delta credit card that I’ve had for almost a decade. I literally told them that if Amex and Delta could have lobbied the government to prevent cuts to FAA positions and ensure transport security, I probably would have kept it. Bad safety = bad for business

SWLRT in Minneapolis. The route bypassed densely populated areas of Uptown and Lynlake and instead ran along an old freight rail corridor through a wetland which became an environmental and PR and cost escalation nightmare. Also severely diminished regional confidence in rail transit for MSP.

If you wanted to cut waste, fraud, and abuse, you would empower the inspectors general. If you wanted more waste, fraud, and abuse, you would fire them.

The constitution has been thrown in the gutter and I'm still getting fundraising emails from Democrats that are written in the "voice" of my elected representative's dog.

We’re sorry and please take us Sincerely, Lower Cascadia

I wouldn’t say Seattle but I do sometimes think about what will happen when The Big One finally hits and the only four roads that lead away from the Puget Sound area are utterly destroyed for months on end

The CFPB is one of the American people’s best defenses against waste, fraud, and abuse. Demolishing it will, of course, lead to more waste, fraud, and abuse.

Half the country needs to go to therapy to understand narcissistic abuse

Donald shoup literally started a movement that gave people the language, evidence, and motivation to push back against a half century of bad parking policy destroying our cities. RIP king. I’ll never stop fighting to eliminate parking mandates 🫡

Holy shit. Heartbreaking loss if true. This man literally changed the entire paradigm of how we think about parking, leading to advocacy groups like PRN and changes like dynamic curb pricing and parking minimum reform. He truly was the Jane Jacobs of parking policy. #RIP #Shoupista
