I’ve just been sent this What have I done

Why is EVERY encounter with a business or organisation these days so hair-pullingly frustrating? Oh, the rules changed in January? But I have here an email from December telling me explicitly to wait UNTIL January to do the thing that I now apparently cannot do.

Every UK national newspaper has printed identical front pages. A thousand UK musicians have released a silent protest album: apnews.com/article/uk-m... Amazing list of publishers and creative associations: www.creativerightsinai.co.uk/members Join the fun, write to your MP today!

HOW are these elements reasonably classed as being under “Screen Time” settings? Feels like they’re trying really hard to hide them.

That’s Google replaced as my default search engine on my main devices now. The sponsored/ hijacked links at the top were annoying. The incorrect AI “summary” above that makes it unusable for me. I’m on DuckDuckGo now but open to other suggestions.

Man goes to the comedy club, says he’s tired, depressed, life has no meaning. He can’t get the antidepressants he needs. Club promoter says, “Well, that’s lucky, our next act’s really funny” Man cries, “But mate, I am the next act”

maybe american planes have started crashing because the government have banned drag

Right to Choose is how I got my autism diagnosis in months rather than years. Ending it without massive investment in mental health and other ND services is a terrible idea. Of course “terrible idea” seems to be the defining feature of Starmer’s leadership so…

I am FINALLY seeing one of Andrew’s solo shows (Geburah) after several years of the best intentions. Hurrah.

The big takeaway here is that Reuters won this case against the AI company on grounds they violated fair use—the judge found the AI company was guilty because, in using copyrighted works to generate its output, it “meant to compete... by developing a market substitute.” Huge.

Meta illegaly downloaded 80+ terabytes of books from LibGen, Anna's Archive, and Z-library to train their AI models. In 2010, Aaron Swartz downloaded only 70 GBs of articles from JSTOR (0.0875% of Meta). Faced $1 million in fine and 35 years in jail. Took his own life in 2013.

This one.

Please sign. Parliament have intially dismissed this out of hand; so now we need to push the point to get a debate. Every signature is someone standing up and going on record to say that the Cass Report is nothing more than a cheap stunt for the ideologically driven persecution of a minority.

Welp. I’m in this picture and I don’t like it.

There are a bunch of governments that would do well to reacquaint themselves with the meaning of "sunk cost fallacy", reassess the feedback they've already been given, and let us all move on past this.

i can see how you would come to this conclusion if your job didn't require you to ever be correct

I’m sorry and no offense to a brilliant filmmaker but the right to make a Labyrinth sequel needs to be reserved for theater girls who actually did wear giant poet shirts in public parks and recite plays aloud to their stuffed animals. You must FEEL the cringe.

That’s going to be excellent in the nhs 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

Not surprising, but also a good example of what Orwell tried to tell us about authoritarians: they are deeply fragile, deeply vulnerable to historical fact, and must constantly suppress that fact to preserve their false narratives about themselves.

Reposting with typo corrected you beautiful pedants

COMPANIES. Please put the name of the company as the sender of the emails on your mailing lists. Not “Jon”. “Jon at [companyName]” is fine. But we all know it’s a mailing list. Making me click to find out which company sent it just makes me want to find the unsubscribe link and click that too.

Google. Please. Let us disable AI overviews in settings. They are NEVER correct. I should not need to type -ai after every search on my phone.

Yup, @jamellebouie.net has this exactly right. What these guys are celebrating/pursuing/yearning for is not masculine energy, it's *adolescent* energy. Drinking Red Bull, crushing Call of Duty, refusing to clean your room. It is indescribably pathetic. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/18/o...

If you're against the government's proposed AI opt-out system, please fill in this survey by the AOI (Association of Illustrators). It only takes 5-10 mins, and the results will be submitted by the AOI to the government. You don't need to be an AOI member to fill it out either

From my response to the UK Government’s AI “consultation”:

If you haven't heard the good news yet, Cybertruck is illegal in the UK, which we found out when they saw one here in Manchester and seized it. It's because of how bad they are. It's illegal because of that.

Fuck this is very validating

'A government spokesperson said: “Current uncertainty about how copyright law applies to AI is holding back the creative industries and AI sector from realising their full potential."' I notice the government are not sugesting the power companies give the AI sector their electricity for free.

Today's correspondence with OVO: 1) I do not have an account with you - someone is using the wrong email address 2) I don't care what they said on the phone, when you email you are talking to someone else 3) I cannot confirm what the correct email address should be. I am not the account holder.

I don't know how many of y'all are watching the migration of American TikTokers to RedNote, but it's the most fascinating thing I've EVER SEEN HAPPEN ONLINE. 🧵

The conversation around this post has made me aware of how much weight I’ve given to “persons B and C would never let person A get away with any terrible shit” in the past, when assessing personal risk. I have not personally run into problems because of it. But it COULD have gone differently.

Huh. Just tried posting on the Google Help forum. Received a message saying that I have reached the limit for posting and to try again later. Checked my profile - zero posts showing. Same issue on multiple browsers. So.... I guess I have no way to request help on this or the original topic.

I am once again begging you to understand that a man can be good at art AND a monster. Pretending once the truth comes out that the art was never actually that good only shelters the next monster.

The media since 2015.

I would simply ask two questions: In which sectors and How?

I just want a government that doesn't constantly say 'SO SOWWY, can't have any libraries because there's no money you see' and yet somehow also constantly say 'GOOD NEWS, a nice man phoned us up and said he was a deposed prince and now we're investing a trillion pounds on MAGIC BEANS'

ASL is a whole actual fucking language, friends. With nuance and depth and a whole cultural community. Don't tolerate this attack.

Of course, this is all brilliant tactics. How do you defuse the left-wingers complaining all the time about the fascist/ transphobic/ otherwise awful policies their governments are implementing? Take away the places that they gather and organise.
