The Trump administration has ordered that the Justice Department unit responsible for prosecuting public corruption "will essentially be disbanded." www.nbcnews.com/politics/jus...

NEW in @51st.news: House Republicans just voted to defund D.C. police and schools. As part of a spending bill to avert a federal government shutdown, they could force D.C. to slash $1.1 billion out of its budget, and no one understands really why. 51st.news/house-republ...

I've been scrolling through FB groups in Texas to see how people have been responding to the measles outbreak, and i'm seeing tons of posts promoting vaccines....for dogs? genuinely curious, why are people willing to vaccinate their pup, but not their child?

"The letter did not indicate a specific date by which the federal government intended to end the program. The decision will almost certainly be challenged in court."

“There are currently four people remaining over there to do the work of 15 people. The danger to the national airspace can’t be understated." "This is a very real threat to the American flying public.” EXCLUSIVE ⤵️

"Mr. Trump had said repeatedly that Mr. Adams, a Democrat, was treated unfairly. But the Justice Department gave a more telling rationale. A memo explained that Mr. Adams deserved a reprieve so he could dedicate himself to Mr. Trump’s 'immigration objectives.'"

We all like to engage with cute animal videos of baby monkeys, little lion cubs… But what if they’re shown in small cages and in boxes, ready for sale? @foeke.bsky.social & contributors @chrisosieck.bsky.social and Darcy White track down a wildlife dealer www.bellingcat.com/news/2025/02...

"One way to rebalance the power between a billionaire troll and regular people is to make sure everyone sees who they really are." such a good read

Brutal editorial from *the NY Post*… “Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s two-day Senate confirmation hearing should remove all doubt: He’s absolutely unfit to head the Department of Health and Human Services.”

may I humbly recommend this VERY good new guide to recycling in NYC from our environment reporter Samantha Maldonado. Part 2 coming later this week!

Not your imagination: fewer food vendor carts are on the streets because vendors are staying home to avoid receiving NYPD tickets that could get them deported. @haidee.bsky.social reports from a very full Manhattan garage.

They're still pulling bodies out of the water, the investigation has barely begun, and the president has already with no evidence blamed Democrats, diversity and an FAA program for people with disabilities that ran through his first term www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202... @iarnsdorf.bsky.social

If you care about free, quality news, pay attention to this: "Congress is actively considering whether to stop requiring taxpayers to subsidize NPR and PBS programming,” - FCC chairman "he did not believe taxpayer dollars needed to go to the organization because of shifts in the media marketplace"

Senior Justice Department officials under President Trump have held discussions with federal prosecutors in Manhattan about the possibility of dropping their corruption case against Mayor Eric Adams of New York, according to five people with knowledge of the matter.

Big clap back from Sen. Elizabeth Warren during RFK Jr.'s confirmation hearing:

I'm watching Kristi Noem's live remarks to DHS staff, but the first thing I have to report is her walkout song is "Hot Mama" by Trace Adkins:

A while back I asked folks why they’re joining Bluesky and the most common response I saw was, “I just want a good place to get my news” and, yall, no. Bad. GET YOUR NEWS FROM THE NEWS PBS Newshour is FREE FOR EVERYONE. youtu.be/PMOYN8JWdUk?...

BREAKING SCHOOL SHOOTING: According to the police, a 17-year-old wounded two female students at Antioch High School outside of Nashville before killing themself. Sadly, one of the students died from her wounds.

"The home I spent so many years building, pouring my savings into, is gone.” “This was an agricultural area, a place of peace. It posed no threat to anyone, no danger to soldiers. We had no ties to politics, no reason to be caught in this violence.”

this is fascinating: "terrain scorched but seemingly extinguished can spawn deadly new fires for weeks after the old ones appear to have gone out, as fire can smolder almost undetected underground or inside wood."

The Palisades fire is the largest of the major wildfires in the Los Angeles area. It started on Tuesday and has burned more than 15,000 acres as of early Thursday morning, according to the state fire agency. nyti.ms/3BYmvS7

a bit of lighter news on an otherwise really heavy day:

Water is becoming a major issue in the Southern California fires. As crews battled the wildfire in Pacific Palisades, they put so much strain on the water system that the fire hydrants ran dry. The fires have also fed ash into the water supply, leading to a boil order notice.

I had no idea how bad the antivenom problem is: Antivenoms from one country often don't work in another ➡️ Market is fragmented, so harder for companies to make profit ➡️ You need ~5-50 vials, but supply is dwindling ➡️ Hundreds of thousands dead/amputated annually (h/t @apoorvanyt.bsky.social)

"It’s striking that the three leaders who will deliver eulogies today came of age politically long after Carter’s presidency. Kamala Harris was 12 years old when Carter was inaugurated as president. John Thune was 16 and Mike Johnson was just 4 about to turn 5." (by @peterbakernyt.bsky.social)

This is wild, Las Vegas police are now saying Livelsberger used ChatGPT to plan his Cybertruck attack

LIVE: Authorities in South Korea arrived at President Yoon Sook Yeol's compound to bring him in over insurrection charges after declaring martial law last month. I'm watching a few livestreams now to see if/when he's detained

BREAKING: LVMPD says the suspect killed inside the Cybertruck had a gunshot wound to his head. They shot themself prior to the explosion.

The EPA has urged farmers to use sewage sludge as fertilizer, but was warned decades ago that the sludge carried toxic “forever chemicals” that have been linked to causing birth defects, cancer and more.

UPDATE: Stopgap funding bill will pass, preventing a government shutdown

LIVE: The House is about vote on the stopgap funding bill. Lawmakers only have until midnight tonight to strike a deal and prevent a government shutdown. Follow along for more updates:

Juvenile shooter found deceased in building. At least 3 dead, including the shooter. Multiple others transported to hospital for treatment.

BREAKING: School shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin. Sounds like there are multiple injuries, including children

NEW: After reviewing leaked documents, we have found UnitedHealth is strategically limiting access to a treatment for thousands of children with autism across the country in order to cut costs. Advocates say the company’s strategy may be illegal. www.propublica.org/article/unit... 👇

I had to reread this to be sure I understood since it is so Kafkaesque: hospitals are giving medications to patients in labor, only to report them to child welfare authorities when they or their newborns test positive for *the same medications the hospital just gave them*

a little photo collage i did from last weekend:

this is the most interesting thing i've seen in a while:

The suspect in custody for the C.E.O. shooting last week was just named as Luigi Mangione, 26. Apparently he had a handwritten manifesto on him criticizing healthcare companies for putting profits over care. Live updates here:

United HealthCare shooter apparently used a ghost gun, we have our Supreme Court tie-in, folks

NEW: Trump will ‘most likely’ pardon Capitol rioters on Day 1, says Jan. 6 committee should be jailed www.nbcnews.com/politics/don...

My latest vid made it on the front page of the NYT:

It's now #28

"The virus has now been detected in 720 herds in 15 states, although experts believe that figure is a significant underestimate, given the lack of mandatory testing. At least 58 people, most of them farm workers, have also been infected."

bummer no one liked my anesthesia joke

Big props to The City and @rachelholliday.bsky.social for this useful guide
