This gorgeously summarizes the problem with large language models. Granted, LLMs can be very useful, too -- but caveat emptor.

On the current trajectory, the US is heading for obsolescence. Politically, geopolitically, economically, geoeconomically. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/19/o...

Siri, can you define irony? ‘The world’s northernmost airport says its runway is starting to melt due to climate change’ www.independent.co.uk/travel/news-...

Global average temperatures are spiking, rising faster than climate models seem able to explain, and in a sane world, every country would be united in a full-scale effort to figure this out & respond. Instead the US is dismantling its scientific infrastructure.

I was surprised to see in today's ONS figures that UK goods exports suddenly rose 3.5% in Q1/25. Then I found this was almost entirely driven by a surge in UK aluminium exports to the US ahead of Trump's tariffs. This alone pushed UK GDP growth by ~0.2 ppts (out of 0.7 ppts total in Q1). Amazing.

Why are solar panels and batteries from China so cheap? High levels of automation, cheap energy, and state-of-the-art manufacturing processes. It's less about low salaries than many people think. My latest Substack: www.sustainabilitybynumbers.com/p/china-chea...

Microsoft is merging Teams and Skype. Good! Skype has always been that thing you accidentally click in a context menu. By default, they enabled anyone to find me using my email or phone number, so I turned those settings off. Why? Because otherwise, these are the messages you get.

Interesting piece which reveals a lot of the tech bro ignorance of government: DOGEr comes in, expects to find lots of inefficiency, is at least willing to acknowledge he was wrong unlike the hard core ideologues.

Crisis-Time Disinfo: Exploiting Collective Stress In a crisis, attention spikes. So does confusion. That’s when disinfo hits hardest.

Authoritarianism functions in predictable cycles and Trump is currently laying the groundwork for using state violence to meet organized resistance. So much depends on what we do now and how we meet this moment. jaredyatessexton.substack.com/p/an-escalat...

Insightful text. If one's friends and family start to distance themselves, it might not be due to a simple disagreement; just a matter of who is right and who is wrong. It might be about how they perceive the morals and character of that individual after witnessing them express their opinions.

Mielenkiintonen tutkimus, naisia pidetään moraalisempina ku miehiä Ihmiset ajattelee moraalisen henkilön muistuttavan naista ja moraalisesti hyviä piirteitä pidetään feminiineinä ja yhdistetään enemmän naisiin Moraalittomasti toimiminen myös nähdään pahempana naisille kuin miehille 1/6 #tiede
