For the last 3 yrs, I was the director for the Science of Science program at the NSF. We funded projects on science communication - science communication to the public, communication of public priorities to scientists, citizens engagement & participation in science. 🧵

BREAKING: We're suing the Trump administration for withholding Title X family planning program grants. Withholding these grants is a politically motivated attack on reproductive health care access for hundreds of thousands of patients, especially people with low incomes.

The study also finds that "measles may reestablish endemicity" and we're in for more than 800,000 cases over the next 25 years *even at current vaccination rates* jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

For the love of all that's holy, stop saying "AI" or "artificial intelligence." LLMs are a tarted up version of autocorrect. Sam's guardian had to spend an hour calming down a mom who was told by "Gemini" that a med prescribed by the oncology team would cause the kid's cancer to progress rapidly.

Sam's guardian asking a question: Does anyone have a copy of the 2022 (most recent) Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) data set, preferably in STATA? The government website no longer shows the data for download... #PowerOfRuralCats hints.cancer.gov/data/downloa...

A lot is happening in the final rush of the 2025 General Assembly sessions. Serious mistakes could be made. open.substack.com/pub/lteague/...

We just published a new study on COVID-19 in Ontario, and it turns out, the way we measured cases may have been way off. Why? Because testing wasn’t equal across age and sex groups. That skews what we think we know. In epi-speak this is called “ascertainment bias”. Here's what we found:

Hard not to read this as the federal government taking the official position that LGBT Americans should kill themselves

We are at least 4-5 stanzas deep in the “first they came for…” poem and there are still not enough people speaking out

What are you doing to improve rural health today, asks Sam the rural health advoCATe? #PowerOfRuralCats

Other cities' sewer districts can only dream of reaching the heights of greatness that Cleveland's sewer district has obtained.

Shared by Sam the rural health advoCATe. Given the rate of closures being reported in Beckers Healthcare, all rural clinicians need to be familiar with these recommendations. #PowerOfRuralCats

The proposal by Bhattacharya to use data from Indian Health Services to study autism is outrageous and should be fought tooth and nail. I have had the honor of working with Tribes on research projects. The steps for approval are many and lengthy, as they should be for this vulnerable population.

They killed DEI in research and now they want to scoop up data from Native Americans and use it for their own purposes without permission. They don’t give a damn about the Tribes. It’s just that it’s easy for RFK Jr. to take their data and use it because of how IHS is funded. Absofuckinglutely not.

Workers who track data on car crashes, drownings, traumatic brain injury, falls in the elderly, and other perils lost their jobs. Advocates worry life-saving work will stop.

Sam the rural health advoCATe notes that poor food access tracks pretty closely with rural (map from USDA Food Environment Atlas. Note: the areas that look grey area actually green if you zoom in.) #PowerOfRuralCats jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

As an advoCATe for an understudied population (rural folks in the US), Sam applauds this attention to health in U.S. territories. #PowerOfRuralCats jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

TN DOC: “Had HB793/SB836 existed when I was a child, we would not have forged that path. I would not have made it through grade school, and I would not be wearing a white coat today… leave children out of immigration politics.” (cc: William Lamberth) www.tennessean.com/story/opinio...

Timeline cleanse.

Sam’s guardian notes that many comments to this piece assert capabilities of autistic persons. Irrelevant. Autistic persons at all levels have a right to live and thrive. Work does not define human value. SG plays guitar for autistic teens and even very impaired kids light up. They are persons.

The administration apparently wants to cut 40% of the budget for federal health agencies. That includes the CDC and NIH. A cut that big would destroy public health. www.cnn.com/2025/04/16/p...

Time = survival, notes Sam the rural health advoCATe. "....OHCAs in rural areas with all levels of economic deprivation were associated with lower odds of ROSC at ED arrival ...[vs] urban areas with low deprivation." #PowerOfRuralCats jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

Still fuming about that press conference. The way RFK Jr. talks about autism is not just scientifically wrong—it’s deeply offensive. Calling autistic kids "damaged" or implying they’ve been "lost" or "stolen" doesn’t just spread misinformation—it dehumanizes real people.

Sam’s guardian is discouraged. It is hard to enthusiastically explain potential health care policy solutions to learners, developing their skills in big picture thinking so they can be the leaders in rural research in the future, when everything may soon be gone. #PowerOfRuralCats

Sam the rural health advoCATe is beyond hissed at the budget cuts to rural shown in this WaPo article. He can’t even. #PowerOfRuralCats

After 21 years at my dream job, I’m very sad to announce my early retirement from the National Institutes of Health. My life’s work has been to scientifically study how our food environment affects what we eat, and how what we eat affects our physiology.

Because only white men can be experts at anything, apparently.

National use seems possible. Potentially quite useful.

Sam the rural health advoCATe approved resources have been updated for all your rural planning needs. SDOH for each state! #PowerOfRuralCats www.ruralhealthinfo.org/states?l

Singapore study of over 11,000 hospital staff found that switching to N95-only PPE during COVID-19 care did not raise infection rates and saved 440,532 gowns, cutting 66,080 kg of plastic waste and SGD 453,748 in costs over 12 months. jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

Tonight, WHO Member States converged on a draft text for the pandemic treaty, which will (surprises notwithstanding) be adopted at World Health Assembly in a couple weeks. Here's an explainer on the last three years of negotiations, what they've won, and what happens now. (1/10)

we all have old keys around the house. keys that once opened doors or locks that no longer exist. keys with purpose long lost. i recently found these keys at our Easterly plant in an unmarked 1950s filing cabinet in storage. it’s history collected on bent metal rings. 🧵

Medicaid is such an essential part of our health care system -- it makes other parts work better. Like Medicare! A great new set of 51-state factsheets is out from @AARP on Medicaid's role for seniors. www.aarp.org/pri/topics/h...
