It took the Nazis one month, three weeks, two days, eight hours, and 40 minutes to dismantle a constitutional republic. When the fire starts to burn, every good person better be ready to man a post with a bucket of water if you want to stop it from raging out of control.

It is something of a relief to see an albiet tacit admission of the role Hollywood has had in all this. This is not to say it’s Hollywood’s fault, but I am always struck by most people’s view that government and institutions as bad rather than helpful.

Modern media has spent years glorifying cynicism and warping public perception of government. The result? A generation that sees democratic governments as inherently evil while worshipping chaos. The current DOGE shitshow is just another symptom of a culture that trusts memes over institutions.

Supporting Ukraine now so we don’t have to face a future Russian conflict at all.

A quick survey of UK & EU military shows it exceeds Russian military capacity on pretty much all measures except ammunition stockpiles. This should be the #1 priority for UK & EU. Increase spending but at increased ammunition levels and training redirected to Ukraine

I am also unconvinced as to the nature of UK defense debate. Spending money on UK defense for a potential future Russia conflict, rather than radically upping the Ukraine military aid would seem misdirected.

The sad thing is to watch the defense debate play out under crisis conditions. If only NATO members had met and maintained the 2% spending objectives then question of taking over the imminent US Ukraine military aid commitment wouldn’t be so harrowing.

just speaking from personal experience now, i think it is really important to understand that simply being black is read by a non-trivial number of people as anti-white extremism

Well, maybe - but do we point to those skews when it comes to discussion of immigration? On that issue, journalists seem to over compensate doi.org/10.1080/1751...

Or another way I heard this was that most people are pro NHS and pro Prison

Marina Hyde's latest column is very good on the subject of "issue bundling".
