🟣 This is the eighth interview in the BOLD series on our special collection. Catrin Finkenauer explains why schools and educators need to earn students’ trust—especially in those from financially insecure backgrounds—to prevent school dropout. boldscience.org/why-schools-...

I always shock my students a bit when I tell them that quantitative data is just qualitative data that has already been interpreted numerically.

let's see what DOGE has been cancelling at the department of education. @stuartbuck.bsky.social went through the list. will link to his post at the end of the thread. i will start with his 4th example: foundational research to understand how american kids are doing at school

more and more i'm gravitating towards the title of "data generalist." i do a little bit of everything. some things better than others. and the rest we'll figure out as we go.

The entire archive of CDC datasets can be found here. HUGE shoutout to data archivists- this work is important 👏🙌🏻 archive.org/details/2025...

CDC's Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) -- which, since 1990, has tracked high school students' behaviors that can influence health and social outcomes (like smoking, drug use, and dietary habits) -- is now offline

Hey if anyone is considering backing up any datasets for some reason today, the Open Science Framework has free storage up to 5G/private repository, and up to 50G/public repository. (The OSF is run by a 501c3 (Center for Open Science), so if you do this you might also consider making a donation.)

This chart encapsulates today's NAEP Score report. Only high achieving kids are making some catch up progress, the bottom is falling. Read my story: hechingerreport.org/naep-test-20...

Reading grad school apps Why is any undergrad institution teaching stats with SPSS? Looking at you, psychology depts R is free and knowing it is a marketable skill

and here I thought I had run out of Cronbach's alpha infographics :D one more is added to the collection - enjoy!

I don't know how common this is because I have only seen this discussed in a few EMA studies. When I analyze multilevel data, I have found it useful to look at multilevel correlations at between- and within-group levels. I use multilevel.cor in "misty" package. For example, it allows you to see if

Calling all #psychometricians & #researchers 📣 Does anybody have good resources/articles that compare & contrast psychometrics and “clinimetrics?” Is this a case where we’ve made up field-specific verbiage or is there a meaningful difference? Anything would help! @academic-chatter.bsky.social

I'm obviously a big #rstats fan, but I wasn't taught it at university. Instead, I learned a random assortment of software depending on the class / textbook. Then I couldn't apply the techniques unless the company had the right software, which is what drove me to learn R. 👌🏼

The viridis palettes are great perceptually uniform color maps for #dataviz, but sometimes at the extremes they're too pale/dark. With ggplot and #rstats, though, you can truncate the palette to avoid the paler colors. I wrote a little guide for how datavizf24.classes.andrewheiss.com/news/2024-12...

The Department of Education does a lot of things, but a big part is being a social safety net. Food access for disadvantaged kids so they can focus on learning? DOE. Access to education for vulnerable and disadvantaged kids? DOE. Grants for higher ed for people who can’t afford college? DOE.

I include this in most shareable R scripts I write

Data management can feel overwhelming. Where to begin? Which practices should I use and when should I implement them? This Appendix summarizes common activities that occur in each phase of the research cycle into a digestible list for your project. #edresearch datamgmtinedresearch.com/appendix

Ever wondered how to ask inclusive, clear and accurate gender questions in survey research? But not had any data support your best guesses? Very excited to announce we have a new paper out in Linguistics Vanguard investigating exactly that! (Out now! Open Access!) www.degruyter.com/document/doi...

Despite the weather, my office amaryllis bloomed which means Spring is “here”.. right??!

Delighted to share our new paper detailing how to create synthetic data to help promote open-science practices (specifically within longitudinal population-based studies) using #ALSPAC as an example wellcomeopenresearch.org/articles/9-5... /1

Enjoyed the cross-departmental work with my partner! We presented in New Orleans for the 2024 National Association of School Psychologists — and stayed for Mardi Gras 🎉🎷 Our poster was concerned with moderators of Tx effect of conjoint behavioral consultation over 3 combined RCTs.

Big 2024 announcement! The “Guide to Effect Sizes and Confidence Intervals” had a pretty substantial update and is slowly becoming the most comprehensive resource on effect sizes and confidence intervals. Here is a thread of some of the new additions 1/5 t.co/ByeSMQNJdp
