This is 100%. Almost everything in the constitution is general or implied. The document literally says there's going to be a post office and congress is in charge of setting it up, deciding what it's rules are.

My mom helped run a Social Security field office for most of my childhood. The population that these locations serve is overwhelmingly disabled, elderly, poor or some combination thereof. That’s who they’re looking to deny services and resources.

This is the most wretched campaign of deliberate, explicit persecution the United States has perpetrated against a minority group in decades. Many of the most important people in politics and journalism are busying themselves trying to figure out how little to say or do about it.

Big Balls’s past gets more scrutiny — including the internship where he was terminated. “You’re willing to risk our entire network to a 17-year-old?” one frustrated executive asked the company’s CEO in 2022. “Are you for real right now?” @cnn.com www.cnn.com/2025/02/21/p...

“That is why Trumpists are so focused on “ending DEI” in the federal workforce. They see anti-discrimination and inclusion as a ladder of upward mobility for people they do not believe should have one.”

I launched a new show yesterday: a musical debate/conversation show called "Summer Album / Winter Album." Here's an excerpt of my conversation with Craig Finn (Hold Steady) and Kevin Morby about the genius of Modest Mouse. Full episode is out wherever you get podcasts! youtu.be/cGeIYPtwaMg

It's strikingly similar to the white supremacy campaigns in Reconstruction North Carolina, as described by Gregory Downs in Declarations of Independence (p.192), where Black employment in government jobs was framed as prima facie evidence of anti-white discrimination.

btw, i will tell you this - i have been talking to people all day, and the media is missing, whether intentionally or not, how absolutely, volcanically angry the people who have been fired are, not because they lost their jobs, but because their jobs matter, *to us*

I don't think we're talking enough about the fact that the pressure to remove DEI from science means women die.

And we got finger-wagged by a New England journo "expert" for not staying in our lane and sticking to our knitting (his words) and leaving hard stuff to (paywalled) NYT and Wapo. So we were right, and we did the right thing, and we didn't need anyone's permission to make our own news decisions.

For all the USPS's faults, Americans have to realize: It's one of the best postal services in the world, even after being kneecapped by DeJoy. Fight for our postal service, guys. I know I will. It is an essential public good.

Trump pardoned the sentence of arguably the single biggest drug trafficker in American history on his second day in office!

here is the thing about the “argument” that democrats should have run roughshod over the law when they had the chance: it is much easier to break the law to destroy a program than break the law to create one.

The scholarly publishing system is broken for a lot of reasons but the precaritization of academic labor is a big one. Paying some of the many, many adjuncts and NTT professors who are also keeping up on literature to do reviews isn't the whole solution but I think it's a big part of it.

This data is funny because it suggests it’s just the same generation of people buying houses over and over again.

Humans do such wonderful, beautiful things if you just let them.

The brokenness of the DC press corps: on @thebrianlehrershow.bsky.social, Brian makes the truthful point that the GOP budget will disproportionately benefit the ultra-wealthy at the expense of many GOP voters; a Politico reporter responds by saying "that's what Democrats are saying."

“What sells books?” People often ask. “Local public radio” I often reply. This lovely piece about a forthcoming book has led to a flurry of sales and one of those orange bestseller banners on Amazon. Thanks @wesa.fm! Congrats @chefstentor.bsky.social!

"for-profit charity"

one really interesting thing about congestion pricing is that Trump basically said “I am killing congestion pricing right now”, got a friendly puff piece in the New York Post, and then every other media outlet went along with it even though it turned out he actually did not kill congestion pricing

Fictional villains: my motivation involves a complex backstory around lost love and a deep yearning to be understood Real life villains: being cruel makes me feel like a big strong man

Put simply: they're stealing our money.

Wild. At the Small Business Administration, some employees were fired, then re-hired, then re-fired. @govexec.bsky.social found at least one employee who was fired, re-hired, re-fired, and then re-hired a second time.

Job(s) posting: @fieldnotes.co is hiring a new researcher and a fellow. Can’t overstate how great working here is: the mission is timely & important, the work is fulfilling & fun, and the team is full of wildly talented & truly good people (and me). Details here: fieldnotes.co/reporting/fi...

Interesting for showing a level of detail about how ad tech works that I rarely see. And for how directly tech companies lie about what they do to reporters.

"Maybe, to put it more simply: we are living in symbol collapse, in which everything is both literal and symbolic, in equal measure. The planes falling from the sky are symbols of a failed regime, but also…they are literal planes falling from the sky. It is endlessly recursive." - Branton Taylor

deadwood understood america, everyone's a greedy opportunist or psycho or a predator or a victim, there are a couple of nice guys and honest women, and there's one billionaire who wants to eat everything, and he must be stopped.

Feb 20 (@reuters.com) - Some U.S. Food and Drug Administration scientists have been told to stop using the words "woman," "disabled" and "elderly" in external communications, two sources familiar with the matter said. www.reuters.com/world/us/fda...

This. Let’s be done with the whole “run government like a business” bs, shall we?

when i say that there are people who care less about workers and their rights than they do the primacy of a masculinist blue collar identity politics, i am taking about people like sean o’brien
