I preferred The Maltese Falcon but enjoyed both. I read The Maltese Falcon first so it may benefit from the feeling of uniqueness of reading the hard-boiled detective story, but I liked reading Sam Spade a little more than Phillip Marlowe

I've only read The Big Sleep, but like Hammett's The Maltese Falcon, it was great at creating atmosphere!
