UBC’s Dept of Medical Genetics is hiring a tenure-track Assistant Professor at the Life Sciences Institute. If you’re interested in joining a strong research community in Vancouver, check out the job posting: medgen.med.ubc.ca/assistant-pr... Please share with anyone who might be a great fit!

A good man has left this world. May he be remembered, because his life was a blessing.

An amazing talk from Dr. Kejia Wu in David Bakers lab at the @uwproteindesign at this year’s HD therapeutics conference in Palm Springs about her amazing designed proteins that bind intrinsically disordered peptides, including poly glutamine, which she’s working to tune to be selective for long Q’s!

This was super meaningful- CHDI foundation has had 20 HD therapeutic conferences, which are a highlight of my year, inspiring hope wise. 5 of us have been to all 20 (me and Profs. Yang, Nguyen, Aronin and Bates). The only thing better than more meetings would be not needing them!

We’re back for day 2 of #CHDI2025! We’re kicking things off with some exciting talks on advancing genetic modifiers and how we can advance them toward therapeutics for HD.

Hello from Palm Springs! The HDBuzz team are here and ready to report on all of the exciting science that we are going to hear over the next 3 days from HD experts who have travelled from all over the world to be at this meeting. #CHDI2025

👀

Amazing HD research being discussed at this years CHDI HD Therapeutics Conference in Palm Springs. @hdbuzzfeed.bsky.social have made the transition here, and they're following it in real time, follow the here!

One of my best friends and coworkers was told he’s most likely going to be laid off tomorrow because he’s a probationary employee He’s only probationary because he’s a veteran hire and they have a 2 yr rather than 1 yr period He’s the highest performing person here This is so fucking stupid

I feel like for CZI this might have been pushing on an open door. Not the staff, but the foundation

We will build statues to the first person who physically stands in front of these DOGE punks and tells them to fuck off. We need to quit with the "no comment" walk off's by senior administrators - time to make them physically remove you from your office.

Look, you can think @aoc.bsky.social is to your left politically, or whatever, but if call her dumb, you're just not paying attention.

Yeah, hey Canada - dual citizen working in the US here, please bring me back!! (Also, looking at your faculty salaries/cost of living with genuine bewilderment, so if you can fix that too, that'd be great).

If he "had" to quit because of something they tried to make him do, he'd better start talking publicly to the press immediately now that he doesn't work for the government.

Man this is awesome! Military members are for very good reason not allowed to disrespect the chain of command, but that doesn’t apply to their kids!

Crazy finding of a resilient person from the Dominantly Inherited Alzheimer Network (DIAN) who has what's thought to be a fully penetrant PSNE2 mutation, but absolutely no cognitive decline. Huge amounts of plaques in the brain, but limited Tau. Super fascinating: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

The real question is was PFC Roland L. Bragg airborne qualified

White kid from Seattle who went to basic training at "Ft. Jackson" and AIT at "Ft. Gordon" here. Both named after traitors. It took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out just out F'd up that was. The new SecDev is so ......... beta.

Gulf of fuck you do not do what they told you

My hot take: Universities and medical centers need to get *MUCH* better at outreach and explaining the benefits of funding independent research to the public.

I think epic-editing is the way to go for many diseases - I know the genome editing folks love slicing and dicing DNA, but I get really nervous about unintended consequences. Especially in the brain where you can't just regenerate f'd up cells.

film still #42 Woe’s Hollow album cover #severance

Mood:

If you need some inspirational music for your "Fuck Donald Trump" push to keep doing science next week, this recent album of Woody Guthrie songs done by Dropkick Murphys is amazing. Oh, and Fuck Donald Trump!

HDBuzz is now on Bluesky! Follow along for updates on #HuntingtonsDisease #research and #clinicaltrial #news. We'll be posting our articles, skeets (is that really what we're calling these?!), and our general scientific musings. Stay tuned! We're here!

I’m doing a lot of yelling at NIH, but I want to specifically say that I fully support all the SRO/POs. This is not on them. They need to be there for the rebuilding effort (which will come) in the future. The community needs to fight on their behalf as well.

I am one of these NSF postdocs. NSF has frozen everyone’s access to their salaries and research stipends (that were already awarded) with no information about when they might be expected to be unfrozen. It still appears like we are expected to continue doing our work though.

I’m putting together a post on what’s going on in the trenches in various parts of the NIH. Anyone who would like to share experiences (anonymously!) can reach me at Dblowe.18 on Signal

My (very NSFW) reaction vibes to the memo being rescinded: youtu.be/WkZ5e94QnWk?...

This is almost too stupid to notice, but it'd be funny if the techbros got their khaki's in a bunch because someone stole their data in a slimy way they can't put their hands on.

I had an old experience w/ OneDrive being horrible back in the day. But now I find it much better for using and sharing MS Office stuff? And it got kind of weird to work in Google Drive since there's no commitment that ecosystem will keep working for my lab.

Fucking surgeons. Like, you're super good at one very specific thing, but not necessarily particularly informed on viral evolution Dr. Soon-Shiong.

Say what you will about AI, but we just had an era in which our smartest quantitative minds spent their time training bots to sell ads to other bots. That era was extremely annoying and boring. Like if smart kids all wanted to do accounting for some reason

Oh thank god- Magrittr one is so burned into my brain stem I’ll never change

@mcuban.bsky.social Please DM me if you are amenable to a conversation. I am at Pitt and was head of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), the NIH institute most focused on fundamental discovery from 2003-22. I have a good understanding of NIH from both inside and out.

Exactly this for my Canadian wife married to me, who was born in the US. The worst part is the super long delays, where no one will tell you what's happening or when expect the next step to happen. So powerless, and that's under the best of circumstances.

Seattle folk, can do something RIGHT NOW to channel your rage and fear and despair. Ballots were sent in the mail today for Prop 1A: A 5% tax on the compensation of millionaires, paid by their employer, to go straight to our Social Housing Developer. Vote. Tell your friends to Vote. Volunteer.

Most folks do not understand how far in advance the planning and logistics of NIH grants take. We prepare for months or years for these submissions for one of 3 cycles per year. This study section cancellation delays grants by at least 6 months when study sections are cancelled.

All - @science.org now has a @bsky.app share button! Enjoy!
