Whoa! Makes sense. Spicy Pony Head is like a proto-Fleming premise.

Privacy concerns are paramount, but the methodology is also flawed. It’s only showing where people with similar DNA live TODAY. If you are 100% “German” but your great grandfather left behind a brother who then moved to Finland, you are going to be “Finnish” if his great grandkids still live there.

Once a year I have to dig through it all again and this was a good reminder. That he was stripping it all back down to this at the end - unfathomably sad to think what might have come next: youtu.be/Rr8JKr4e0S8?...

Would love to read you on Mahler generally but specifically his refusal to write an opera - the biographical explanation (Wagner was his day job) is unsatisfying. Did he know in that moment it could only be vapid (Strauss)? Would living to see Wozzeck have changed his mind?

Always thought this record must have been on heavy rotation in the Pollard household.

Fair - I guess you can only use each technology once? I’ll leave it to the boys to fine-tune the lists as well as the rules (always their strong suit).

Riffing on the “movie plots cell phones would have ruined” meme, select from a list (e.g., antibiotics, sous vide, rockets, wheelie bags) the technology that would have most disrupted the plots of certain movies (e.g., Bringing Up Baby, Come and See, Ben Hur, Great Muppet Caper).

Wildly changing and contradicting his position depending on who he spoke to last (Fricka, Brunnhilde, Loge, etc.) (art of the deal)

They are so messy - when I see this I know there’s going to be a pile of seed on the ground. Finches and sparrows are so demure.

Welcome to the obsession. Tubas and Sousaphones have the bass line, reeds and winds the arpeggios, bones and horns the melody. The glockenspiel is already there. Muted cymbals and snare through first verse and chorus, full percussion joins on second. Brass trade off vamps on the synth line outro.

Truly inexplicable. My only controversial Squeeze-related opinion is that “Goodbye Girl” would be an *excellent* marching band song.

This feels like the opposite path that My Brave Face took from the absolute banger that Elvis brought into the studio (starting at 1:00 below) to the drek he released. youtu.be/J0PmzS6AUWo?...

Your comment a while back that the Chéreau production did Wagner so many political favors made me curious of your thoughts on what regieoper actually achieved on that front, despite itself.
