I’m struck by how close we’re getting to finally curing some of the world’s worst diseases—sickle cell, Alzheimers, pancreatic cancer, etc.—at the same time that the world’s worst people are destroying medical research and care around the world.

Two Republican senators told me tonight this vote shows they can execute the same strategy again — cut Democrats out of the negotiations on a gov’t funding bill, pass it thru the House, and expect Senate Dems to back down and not filibuster it. “We liked it over here,” one said.

They're trying to deport my colleague from the med school and holding her without counsel. She was coming back from a visit to her family. If there are ways to help I'll let you know. www.providencejournal.com/story/news/l...

At some point schools need to really start fighting back against this, collectively and aggressively. The letter to Columbia makes it clear that the goal is not just DEI or anything else: it’s about New Colleging the entirely of our higher education system.

@schatz.bsky.social when are you going to tell us what you were thinking?

Among the material devastation to everyday people, Senate Dems have now blown a hole in their ability to work with the House. We had an agreed upon plan, House took immense risk, then Senate turned around midway and destroyed it w/ a fear-based, inexplicable abdication. They own what happens next.

This is insane

weird how he keeps singling out liberal jews isn't it

The provision of the 14th amendment that the Supreme Court unanimously wrote out of the constitution existed for a reason. Its drafters knew what would happen if you allowed insurrectionists back into power.

Trump goes full fascist during his political speech at the DOJ

This is the gold standard measure of atmospheric carbon, the one you see in almost every chart that tracks emissions.

Extraordinary moment — Nancy Pelosi issues a statement calling on Democratic senators to reject the House funding bill, i.e. to defy Chuck Schumer. "Democratic senators should listen to the women," she says, referring to Murray/DeLauro who want a 1-month stopgap bill instead.

KEEP CALLING. PEEL OFF ALL DEM SENATORS YOU CAN. ☎️: (202) 224-3121 Tell them to vote NO on Cloture and NO on CR. Vote is pushed to after 1:15ish for now. Situation is fluid. The only public YES votes are Schumer and Fetterman. They need 7-8 total. KEEP CALLING. Call retiring Senators too!

Hilariously craven. Democrats invoked a law allowing Congress to override Trump’s “national emergency” declaration, which allows him to impose unilateral tariffs. Requires a vote within 15 days. To avoid a vote, the GOP declared that the entire rest of this year will just be one very long day.

As you may know, I've been living in Canada since August. In this interview, I tried to convey something I don't think Americans quite appreciate — how profoundly *angry* Canadians are, and the danger a US-Canadian rupture poses to our future prosperity and security www.vox.com/politics/403...

Trump congratulates @schumer.senate.gov on voting for the CR. Pathetic.

"Universities are independent centers of ideas and often prominent centers of dissent. Autocrats are allergic to sources of dissent, so they almost invariably seek to silence, weaken, or control them."

We’re talking about war with NATO ALLIES. What are we doing here? 🤷‍♂️ Again, this is the worst & most egregious of the many should-immediately-end-a-presidency scandals. He’s the commander in chief, & he is massively endangering the load bearing pillars of our national & international security order.

AOC: "There is a deep sense of outrage … There are members of Congress who have won Trump-held districts … walked the plank and took innumerable risks in order to defend the American people … To see some Senate Democrats even consider acquiescing to Elon Musk, I think it is a huge slap in the face."

If I’m thinking thru the senate rules right (by no means certain), I think a single D senator can force the voting that’s starts tomorrow to last into the beginning of next week by refusing unanimous consent. That can slow things down and allow the backlash to expand.

The brain drain we are setting in motion on so many fronts is incredible

I’d like to ask every single New Yorker who’s remotely left of center to get actively involved in your local Democratic Party chapter with the goal of driving Schumer, Gillibrand, Hochul, Adams, Cuomo and all the other dead wood into retirement.

This is also known as invading Panama.

Too much is at stake not to keep up the pressure on the Senate Democrats up to the very moment of the vote.

Incredible reporting, including the detail that a 22-year old former Palantir intern was given access to everyone in America's social security info, including “names of spouses and dependents, work history, financial and banking information, immigration or citizenship status, and marital status."

NEW: Details on the DOGE team currently accessing highly sensitive Social Security records as well as on the chaos in the agency, where workers can’t verify deaths (important to combat fraud!) due to a credit card freeze. This is by @davidgilbert.bsky.social and @makenakelly.bsky.social

Schumer is acceding to the GOP’s plan to blow up D.C.’s budget by prohibiting us from spending a billion dollars *of our own money,* forcing devastating cuts to vital services out of pure spite toward our city and its residents. And he doesn’t bother defending his decision to throw us under the bus.

The President is driving our economy into the ground, damaging our international relationships, breaking the government, and exposing Americans to danger. He owns that. Allowing this CR to proceed puts a Democratic party stamp on it. It demonstrates weakness when the American people need strength.

AOC: It is almost unthinkable why Senate Democrats would vote to to hand the few pieces of leverage that we have away for free when we've been sent here to protect social security, protect medicaid, and protect medicare.

Don't take this as gospel. It's not official. It's a very knowledgable source's best understanding of the situation. This persons likely Yeses on cloture are. Schumer, Hassan, Peters, Durbin, Schatz, King, Shaheen, Fetterman, Cortez Masto and Gillibrand.

a thing about this list is that it passes the CR with the votes of safe seat and retiring Democrats, in an attempt to protect frontliners not from general-election threats but rather their own primary electorates. schumer's protecting them from you, not the general election.

This is correct. In addition to all the other grave consequences of this bill it essentially defunds a big chunk of local DC government.

No Dem Senator has to follow Schumer here. This is a weak stategic move driven by fear and learned helplessness. Don't follow him. He's leading the party into irrelevance and helping Trump and Musk in the process. Call your Dem Senators and ask them not to join Schumer's surrender tomorrow.

The richest man in the world gave a 22 year old without a security clearance everyone in America’s social security and tax information and Senate Democrats did absolutely fuck all in response. Incredible work everyone.

I have to say: Chuck Schumer is a weak man and a fool. This was the one cudgel Dems had. Now it's up to the courts which we new from the beginning were at best going to slow some things down. There's 18 hours left to somehow bring additional pressure to bear. It will be really hard to do that.

Call your senators and let them know if they join Schumer here you will never give them another dime or another vote and you’ll devote your time and money to anyone who primaries them.

Gotta say this holds up quite well. Here's my thoughts about where things stand now after Schumer has finally shown his cards. Seems clear he has enough Yes votes on cloture to give Trump and Musk their bill. He probably has at least a couple to spare. The vote is tomorrow morning. The odds ...

SCHUMER (paraphrased): “what President Trump is doing is terrible. We Democrats do not APPROVE of it at all. But we will COLLABORATE with him. Yep, vaguely disapproving collaborators. That’s us. The leadership of the opposition party.”

This is wrong on the merits. If the great majority of the Senate Dems REALLY think they need to block the CR, as they claim, they need to make clear to their leader.

CALLS ARE WORKING - it has bought us precious time, but we NEED to keep the pressure up. Tomorrow is the cloture vote. KEEP CALLING: (202) 224-3121 ☎️☎️☎️ Tell your Dem Senator to vote NO on Cloture and NO on the Republican spending bill. Do NOT assume your Senator will be good on this. Trust me.

this is the times quote. not zimmer's. but not sure we should be calling this "aid". a hurricane didn't hit the school or the school is out of work. these are things like research grants. paying scientists to do research.
