yeah, the meaning is a bit more muddled these days (but I think the unwritten subtext of that feature is that it’s just one form of distribution and that it alone doesn’t actually make something a “podcast”—at least in the eyes of most podcast consumers, who have specific, non-YT ways of consuming)

joking aside, it’s a little absurd that on my SEVENTH trip I find myself anxious about things that I never once hesitated or worried about in the SIX PRIOR trips—and I think the tiktok algorithm is a big reason why. just a microcosm for how algorithmic feedback loops feed off of and amplify anxiety

No worries! I personally would probably prefer to always watch something like this as video anyway (seems like there’s a lot of really good context added in the visuals). But just a heads-up that referring to anything only available on YT as a “podcast” is a little confusing/misleading 😅

nice article! just FYI, the series has only been published in the VIZ Manga subscription service for a little over a year

Looks very good, and I’m excited to watch! Since you referred to it as a podcast, does that mean it’ll also be available as an audio podcast feed?

lol you can kinda see from my post timing that it took me ~10x as long to read this as any of Sanderson's earlier books @_@. the second half is definitely more engaging than the first half, but it's maybe a 1->1.5 bump, not a "this was so worth it!!!" jump

The Way of Kings: ★★★★☆, that was quite good! not in the quick, thrilling, twists-and-turns way like the Mistborn trilogy — but as a slow, measured buildup, an introduction to the world that focuses primarily on establishing investment in characters.

There used to only be a couple cards (infamous to judges lol) where this “when security is removed/checked” trigger timing would come up, but recently it’s on more and more cards these days (47 as of BT20)

there’s also an unofficial simulator (DCGO) that you can use to try out the game, or official tutorial apps for mobile (that let you play with starter decks)

if you use Bandai’s TCG+ app you can see if there are any local stores that run events (and usually if they do events they’ll sell it too, but there are sites like gamenerdz where you can buy boxes online for similar prices — or you can just get singles from tcgplayer)

“what radicalized you?”
learning to play yugioh in an online simulator and then showing up to the 7th grade cafeteria horrified to see everyone using de-spell to react to and cancel out magic cards as they were being activated

thank you, liberator, for introducing graphical iconography for a security check, which I will now proceed to abuse to shame friends when they make bad takes

oh, no, I’ll miss a…. clear file…
(is what I tell myself to feel better because the photo shoots and food truck do actually sound really cute lol)

at first Tri’s release seemed incredibly lucky—leading up to it there was no news of international release, so it seemed like we’d be some of the first non-jp-residents to see it. then it was actually incredibly unlucky when it was announced as coming subbed to Crunchyroll ~24 hours before lol

wait, this game has text in it?

Wait, is that not in there? I could’ve sworn I remember it, and the “…blonde.” punchline landing really well in the theater

yeah, I think personally what feels gross to me about it is the competitive commodification-as-content angle of tiktok. reductive comparisons are nothing new, but the tiktok algorithm basically makes it a race to the bottom in *how* reductive the comparisons can be

I get the sentiment (it does feel rude to boil an author’s unique work to just “X + Y = Z”, I agree!), and I do think there is a genuine (and annoying) shift in the way the public talks about this stuff, but referencing comparison titles is a huge part of publishing acquisitions and sales

but clearly the writing quality is correlated with the number of proper nouns

haha, this post was literally my wake-up call (signed up for both february ultimate cups this morning lol). been so long since I’ve actually played in a large event instead of judging though haha

yeah that makes a lot of sense (I think most people undervalue how much fatigue affects large events). also going with mirage is a noble effort (to signal to bandai that it needs a ban lol)
I’ve been so focused on judge and tool stuff lately that I’ve barely played, I should really change that lol

haha I’m glad to hear it tho! most people I know who used to be really into the game have kind of emotionally moved on and just play a little here or there.
what deck were you playing at nats, btw?

woah, nice! missing top cut sucks, but that’s such an impressive placement! (and you have the honor of being the number one player not in top cut lol)
hadn’t seen you post about the game recently so I was worried you weren’t playing anymore lol

also lmao “for windows version 2.0, requires windows version 3.1”
also why are the installation instructions so passive-aggressive? that many ellipses would make a zoomer cry
