I'd look at the platforms - archives of Reddit or Twitter - and see what gets shared. Challenge would be to identify when paywalls went up for a large enough set of news sites - not sure if such a list exists.

Its a cool idea - my intuition would be that the top 10 stories yearly are still going to be heavily slanted towards paywalled media, NYT and WaPo are always going to be hubs for big news given their wide reach.

have you tried any of the extensions for finding your twitter friends on bluesky? After you install it, you go on your following page on Twitter and scroll through to find potential matches. I used Sky Follower Bridge and it worked pretty well.
