Word of the day is ‘bugiard’ (17th century): one who distorts the truth beyond all recognition to fit their own agenda.

On the anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, we thought we'd answer a question that's often asked, "If they raised the Mary Rose, why not raise the Titanic?" Allow our scaled diagram to explain...

Why even have a brain, any ideas, any ability to express them, any kind of communication with other people, any desire to solve problems or invent anything, any reason to learn, any use for your eyes or your heart, or any reason to teach or create

Coinciding with it's "No" letter Harvard has refashioned its university homepage into essentially an advertisement for the social benefits of university research. This is the current front page.

For whatever reason ICE doesn't have a Bluesky account. So I thought I'd drop this in here. Note the Free Speech crowd has now put the good folks at ICE in charge of stopping, detaining and deporting "Ideas".

the jamelle bouie secret to presciently anticipating the behavior of the president is to just ask myself what a dumbass bully would do

Seven billion of us being held hostage by the dumbest people alive.

With Trump starting a trade war that could cause a global recession, here’s my piece on power and stupidity—which explains why so many idiots end up in charge. www.forkingpaths.co/p/on-power-a...

thank you donald trump for your diligent work as you make the US a stagnant, backwater pariah state and playground for sociopathic tech oligarchs

We simply had to intentionally destroy the world’s strongest economy while dismantling our scientific and educational infrastructure to ensure that a team with a trans girl would never finish second place in the Mountain West volleyball standings again

Finally we will be liberated from the tyranny of disposable income and a functioning economy

Good Lord, what madness rules in brain-sick men

Big night for the woke mind virus.

Pretty much every kid dreamed of going to Disneyland. I did too, but I knew it wasn’t going to happen. So instead I focused on the achievable goal of going to the Buried Village in Rotorua and read eagerly about the 1886 Tarawera eruption. I still get excited thinking about those trips.

When you look at the list of institutions they want to defund: libraries, museums, the Smithsonian, public schools, PBS, NPR, archives, you can clearly see that the real threat to an authoritarian regime is an informed and educated public
